Equipment:
2 goals, cones, bibs, footballs, whistle, first aid kit, whiteboard.
Set-up:
Pitch size: 50/60 yards (length) 40 yards (width)
Both teams start in a formation of GK-3-3-1
* Team to be coached: blues *
Aim:
Red's must look to build play up and work the ball into the blues half before they can score. Blues must be patient in defending and when the right time comes, win the ball and work the play into attack as quickly and effectively as possible using quick thinking, movement, passing and communication. Offisdes do apply and corners are allowed.
Start points:
1. Red striker into blue full back.
2. Red wide midfield into blue central midfield.
3. Red striker into blue GK.
To make the session harder:
* Change red formation to GK-2-3-2.
* Time limit for blues - once they have won the ball back, they have 10 seconds to create a goal scoring opportunity.
* Make area smaller.
* Progression into an 11 vs 11 practice - full pitch.
To make session easier:
* Reds are resticted to 2 touch when in attacking third.
* Reds are restricted to 2 touch when in midfield area (marked by cones).
* Reds have to make a minimum of 6 passes before they can shoot.
* Split the pitch into thirds, with players restricted to their third depending on what position they play i.e. defence, midfield and attack; attacking team can advance out of their third to create overloads.
Coaching points:
TECHNICAL: When to play/when to keep possession, angle/timing/distance of forward runs, quality/type of pass, body shape.
PHYSICAL: Quick movement, transition of ball.
PSYCOLOGICAL: Recognising opportunities early (look for trigger points), patience to recover the ball.
SOCIAL: Communication (verbal and non-verbal).

Squad Practice (20 mins)
Equipment:
1 goal, cones, bibs, footballs, whistle, first aid kit, whiteboard.
Set-up:
x2 boxes
Box 1: 15x18 yards
Box 2: 20x30 yards
Box 1:
4 blue players vs 4 red players, with 2 neutral players who can work for both teams.
* Neutral's move around outside of box 1 and only return passes to team who've passed to them *
Box 2:
1 goal, 1 GK, 2 neutral wingers (1 on each wing).
Behind goal: 2 defenders and 1 neautral player.
Aim:
Blues vs reds in box 1. Red's have to make a minimum of 4 successful passes. Once this is achieved, they may play out to either winger. When the ball is played out to a winger, 2 reds from box 1 should enter box 2 and look to receive the ball from the winger and make an attempt at goal. If the blues get the ball, they have no minimum passes to make and can play straight out to a winger, with 2 blues then making the transition to box 2. Neutrals outside box 1 can be used by either team as a passing source - they must constantly move and make themselves available for receiving and passing.
* After 2 plays, change the teams so that blues have to play 4 passes and reds can play straight out.
* First 2 plays for each team are un-opposed in box 2.
Progressions:
1. Introduce defenders - during the transition from box 1 to box 2, the defenders enter box 2 and try to defend the goal.
2. The neutral player from behind the goal can enter box 2 (centrally) when the transition from box 1 to box 2 has been made.
To make the session harder:
* Introduce the neutral player as a defender instead of an attacker.
* As soon as the killer pass is made to the winger, the 2 attackers are timed from the pass to shooting.
To make session easier:
* Team's in box 1 shadow defend instead of being opposed to start.
* Make box 1 area larger.
* 3 attackers may enter box 2 once the killer pass is made.
* Neutral player from behind the goal can start in box 2 (centrally) as a passing option (instead of wingers).
