Description

Session Objective:

  • To improve the players' ability to play a wall pass with a teammate.

Technical Outcomes:

  • Body Positioning so you can receive to play in the direction of your teammate
  • Timing of the pass
  • Timing of the run
  • Ball speed and accuracy

Warm Up- 1 (15 mins)

Set Up:

  • Players: 10
  • Grid size: 5x 6m x 6m

Instructions:

  • Players are to be split up evenly between the two cones shown in the diagram.
  • The player 1 will always start with the ball.
  • Player will play a diagonal pass to player 2.
  • When player 2 receives the pass they must take TWO touches.
  • As the initial pass is played player 1 must make a run to the far cone.
  • As player 1 arrives on the cone, the pass from player 2 should arrive too.
  • Player 2 will make a rest run to the far cone.
  • Continue this for 4 repetitions.
  • Swap player roles after the 4 repetitions.

  • Can you play an accurate pass to feet
  • Can you take a touch to set up your pass
  • Can you play the pass in sync with the players run
  • Can you ensure your body positions is correct

Warm Up- 2 (15 mins)

Set Up:

  • Players: 10
  • Grid size: 5x 6m x 6m

Explanation:

  • Player 1 will begin with the ball and play a pass to player 2 (as shown).
  • As player 2 receives the pass they must take TWO touches and play a pass to the adjacent cone.
  • As player 2 tales a touch player 1 must begin a run to the far diagonal cone to arrive with the ball.
  • Player 2 will make a reset run up and player player will make a reset run to the adjacent cone with the ball.

Key Coaching Points:

  • Can you weight your pass to your teammate
  • Can you take a good touch to set up your pass
  • Can you play the pass in sync with the run
  • Can you ensure you have the correct body position (see the whole field)

Skill Training (25 mins)

Set Up:

  • Players: 10
  • Grid size: 18m x 22m (5m end zone)

Explanation:

  • 5v5 (team in possession must have one player in the end zone).
  • Defending team cannot go into the end zone.
  • The attacking team must aim to keep the ball until the opportunity to play the end player opens up. 
  • To score a goal a player must play the end player and receive a wall pass.
  • Only the player that passed the ball to the end player can receive it.

Progression:

  • One defender can go into the end zone.
  • TWO touch only.

  • Can you control the speed of the ball
  • Can you play a pass with the correct weight
  • Can you position yourself to face the field and receive the ball
  • Can you take a well weighted touch to set up your pass
  • Can your time your run to arrive with the wall pass
  • Can you time the pass to arrive with the players run

  • The attacking teams can only reach the end zone via a pass.
