Arrival Activity - (15 mins)

Organisation: Split players into three groups, 2 Groups will be wide players and the central players will be trying to score from wide crosses. One of the wide players begin by travelling with the ball towards the "full-back" (pole) and after beating the pole, crosses towards a striker central player running towards the "second 6 yard box". Alternate attacks from each side.

After every player has had a turn crossing, Rotate the groups so all have a turn in each scenario.

Picture 1: Ball played with same foot as side into "second 6-yard" box with 1 or 2 touches, curling in - out around poles/ defender in the air or on the ground.

Picture 2: If player is inverted (e.g left footer on the right side) take a touch e.g outside cut to get the ball preferred side and create space for curled cross against pole/ defender, in between poles/ defenders in the second 6-yard box.

Bonus Picture: If player is inverted, either first time or after a player takes a small touch, so that the ball is slightly towards their strong foot to try and outside of the foot curled cross into the second 6 yard box .

Progressions:

- Wide player makes a run without the ball and the next team mate plays the ball forward for him to run onto to cross.

Coaching points:

- Curling cross (picture 1); approach ball behind and slightly away facing towards the goal line, take a small step with kicking foot towards the ball to rotate body towards target, plant non-kicking foot by the ball and kicking slightly under the ball with the instep, with a follow through across the body to generate curl.

Outside cut (picture 2): Approach the ball similar to a curling cross, plant non kicking foot next to ball, bring kicking foot across planted foot to "cut" middle of ball with outside of foot.

- After cutting foot has planted, plant non-kicking foot away from ball to cross out to in or take another touch.

Lead in (15 mins)

Primary Player: Full back (2/3)

Primary Unit: 2/3 and Wide player (7/11)

Secondary Unit: Central midfielder(8/10) & Striker (9)

Organisation: Attacks continue to alternate between sides, 2/3 plays into the 8/10 who plays into 7/11. After the initial pass, the 2/3 makes an overlapping run, when the 7/11 receives the ball, they take a touch towards the goal & look to play curled pass around the "fullback pole" towards the forward running 2/3. The full back crosses to the second six yard box to the striker who attacks between the near post & penalty spot.

Progressions/ adaptations:

- Rotate players to give others opportunities in different positions.

Coaching points/ pictures:

- 2/3 makes curved run out to in, near touchline

- Reverse pass; 7/11 takes touch towards the goal, plants non-kicking foot towards space 2/3 is running towards and passes with instep/ side foot and follow through across body to generate in to out curl.

Reinforce earlier points/ pictures.

Lead in opposed (15 mins)

Same as above but now with a opposing full back & centre back with optional wide/ midfielder player initially putting passive pressure and then progressing to full pressure. If the opponent wins the ball, run the ball to the halfway line or pass back to the coach.

Picture 3: Ball is played into the 8/10 by the 2/3, who plays into the 7/11. After the initial pass, the 2/3 overlaps the 7/11 (inverted winger) takes dribbles towards the goal then plays the ball between the full back and centre back with a reverse pass.

Picture 4: 7/11 receives the ball in a wide position i.e. touchline from the 8/10, plays in the full back using their right (7)/ left (11) with a curled side foot pass into the space behind the opposing full back, drawing in the opposing full back. The 2/3 underlaps into the space between the full back and centre back.

Bonus picture: 2/3 plays into 7/11 directly and does same movement as picture 4 & 5, assuming they are not on the same vertical line.

Progressions:

- Different combinations e.g. full back plays back to the winger who looks to shoot.

Coaching points:

- Look to curl ball around the opposing fullback, to take out central defender and tempt goalkeeper.

- if closed down quickly look to unbalance defender 1v1, by bringing the ball towards the right with a small touch and using a large touch towards the touchline e.g. outside cut.

Technical Social
movements based on team mates actions/ triggers and verbal communication of runs into space

Phase of play (25 mins)

1-4-3-3 (In possession) vs 1-4-4-2 (out of possession) - Ball starts with attacking team as the goalkeeper/ defensive midfielder (4) who feeds to full back and the play goes live. The attacking team are allowed 2 transitions, whereas the defenders are allowed 1. If the defence win the ball again or the ball goes out of play, the play restarts. 2,11, 10 & 9 continue with their previous roles & responsibilities, the 10 goes towards the edge of the box for a potential cut back the 8 looks to attack the far post.

Opposition management: Can you counter to score/ run the ball into the poles.

Reinforce previous coaching points and pictures.

Adaptations/ progressions:

- if no second goalkeeper, use a "4" and have poled gates to run into instead.

- Continuous play with throw ins/ different start points.

- Use a right full back and adapt midfield and possibly no. of centre backs. Wide players must be like for like to recreate realism.

- Encourage opponents to defend deep to restrict space.

Bonus picture: Full back's forward run creates space for other players to create goalscoring opportunities.
