Set Up: 1

 6 10 x 10 yard areas

4  to a group ( can change depend on numbers)

Aim: 

Getting into correct position. low center of gravity,"surf" with arms out. Side on. On toes. 

Progression 1: White plays to Black then defends. Black tries to take a touch forward and drive to the line. White can shadow/defend but doesnt take ball. Rotate lines

Progression 2: White plays to black then defends. Black tries to use a touch and a skill to beat them to get behind and through the gate. White tries to " stand them up" or keep them in front. Rotate lines

Progression 3: White plays to Black then defends. Attackers try to get through blue gate ( 5 points) or red gate ( 2 points). Defender can score a point by not allowing a score. 5 points for forcing them wide past touch line(s)

Coaching Points: 

Shut Down – As quickly as possible, with big stride lengths 

Sit Down – Side on, low to the ground. Knees bent, arms out for balance

Slow Down – Slow your feet down but don’t stop 

Show Down – Then keep a good defensive posture ready to adjust body shape to match movement and direction of the attacker.

Set Up: 

 Same 20 x 30 yard zones 

   Ball is passed to attacker to start the play. Defenders defend 2 v 2. If the ball is won, defenders can score into the goal. Attackers try and score a point by breaking the defenders and driving past the line. 

Aim:Maintain key defensive points. Introduce pressing and covering

Coaching Points: 

Reinforce pressing and covering together. Cover passing lanes.

Set Up:3 teams of 4  ( can have another group with 3 teams of 3). 

If the defensive teams wins the ball. They transition to other attacking team looking for target players and maintaining.Posession. Losing team defends. 

             

Aim: Group pressing and covering

Coaching Points:

Working as a group to apply 1 v1 pressure (pressing) while the others cover passing lanes. 

Cutting off passing lanes

Proper position on the ball.

Aim:

Defenders to win the ball and counter as quickly as possible. Attacking team to transition to defend small goals once ball is lost. 

Coaching Points:

-Defensive team to stay tight/compact

-Communication. 

-Apply Pressing/Covering to game situation

Set up:

7v7 with keepers. divided into 3 zones of 20 yards ( 60 x 40 yd)

Teams  try and progress through the zones to goal. 

Keepers are involved and play 4v2 out of the back. There is a neutral player in the middle zone. 

Once ball played in the middle, its 3 v 2. After it is played into  attacking zone, 1 player and neutral can go in to make 4 v 2. 

Progression: take out neutral player. 

Regression Add 2 neutrals

Coaching Points:

Use bounce passes and runs from previous drills

make run in behind defenders

find "number" ( overloads) * 3 v 2, 4 v 2 and play together.

Work on overloads and overlaps. Look to have advantage, postive numbers ( 4 v 2 ,3 v 2) before progressing.

Focus on intervening with individuals away from the play.
