Emergency Defending

Principles & Session Focus

To understand how to defend in emergency situations when players are out of shape or caught out of position. 

Focus Team

3 - 4 - 3 defensively (missing the 9)

Opposition Team

4 - 3 - 3 Offensively (missing a CB)

Focus

Working on different emergency situations where players are out of position. These include

1.  9, 10, and weak side 8 are caught out for a 8 v 6

2. CB and WB caught out for a 8 v 7

3. Ball played in between out MF who are too high

Technical Points

• Shape and principles, maintaining 1 player in each wide channel at all times when in the attacking 1/3 apart from when in the final 25 metres
• Technical execution of opening up to receive and be able to switch the ball
• Decision making when in possession of the ball to either advance the ball or look to switch it to exploit the opposite side.
