Organisation and Layout

Unopposed technique drill

  • Players set up into 4 groups of 3
  • 4 lines of cones set out approx 10 feet apart from each other
  • Players take it in turns to run length of area in and out of the cones then wait until all have gone before starting again from opposite end of area.

This is an unopposed drill and the focus is on reinforcing the mechanics of dribbling and running with the ball rather than speed of running

Dribbling - 

1. Keep ball close

2. Vary surfaces of the foot

3. Head Up

4. Change of pace

5. Change of direction

Running with the ball - 

1. Get ball out of feet.
2. Make contact with the laces
3. Head up
4. Get into running stride
5. Move quickly

Progression, Regression and Adaptation

  • Vary speed of pace, use both feet

Organisation and Layout

Skill drill with challenge (competition)

  • The set up is the same as in the Technique drill, however, it is turned into a Skill drill as the element of competition and speed is added.
  • The players will run with the ball in and out of the cones like in previous drill but when they get to the end they will turn and run back in and out of the cones again and then the next person in their line will.

Key Factors

  • As well as being good practice this also adds a fun element into the session and competitiveness with players encouraging each other throughout.
  • Target is to be the quickest team to complete their course
  • Mechanics are reinforced throughout by coaches observations
  • Players are reminded to keep good technique even though it is a race and to keep ball close to them and under control.

Organisation and layout

A progression of the previous drills, this time a player runs with the ball against a defender with the aim of running the ball past the defender and over the end line. Players then swap over so the attacker joins the back of the defenders line and defender joins the back of the attackers line

Key factors

  • Players will be encouraged to take each other on to reinforce the topic of the session of dribbling and running with the ball
  • Coaches to reinforce mechanics of dribbling and running with the ball during game

Progression, Regression and Adaptation

  • Adaptations can see the defender close down the gap quicker to put more pressure on the attacker or the defender to jockey the attacker instead of tackle.
