BPO Defending against a counter attack

Cycle 1

Week #5

Session #2 (BPO Defending against a counter attack)


Definition: To win the ball.


Moment/Phase: BP-BPO


A session to recap individual defending principles and to search for tactical solutions to the counter vs 2 forwards


Transition session focus on defensive recovery

Attacking > Defending

What:  Win the ball against controlled possession or counter attack

When: When we lost the ball and receive counter attack from opposition.

Where: Mainly half way line to our defensive 18 yard.

Who: Primary - 5/6 (Dealing with two forwards), Secondary - 4/8/10 (cutting supply line), Tertiary - 9 (forcing a rushed ball)

Why: We are/were going attack and our defensive line is going to higher but if we lost the ball, we give big space behind us to opponent. That's why we need to react to win the ball asap and drop the backward to fill the spaces behind us.

Rationale - We played a team a month ago who played two forwards and they caused us problems through their directness

of their play so dealing with that is a great step to stop them from causing us as many problems next game.

Coaching Points:
Pass and reactive move to the direction where the player passes the ball.

This aims to build habit to have quick movement once player passes the ball.

Refelction/ Evaluation

Reaction speed needs to increase to adopt real game intensity against 1 on1 or counter attack

Possession Training (1v1) (20 mins)

1v1 Warm Up - Pressure Game in Pairs

Objective 

Players to understand how to pressure aggressively 

Players to know where to send players using body shape

How to Play

Opponent must stop this by forcing player out of area or winning ball back

2 minute bursts as this game is intense over the area

Coaching Points

Use body to protect, use body to get the ball away from defender

Every player to be aggressive and look to keep the ball as long as possible 

Force them to the lines to take space away from them

Use body angle to force the direction of approach

Possession Training (2v2) (25 mins)

2 centre backs vs 2 forwards 

  • Feeder passes in to 9 with passive pressure to start
  • When the player receives the ball defenders can defend 
  • Forwards look to attack goal quickly as possible and can use feeder as neutral
  • Swap attackers every couple of goes

Coaching Points

  • Zonally engage and apply principles of pressure, cover and balance
  • Look to pressure the forwards into tight areas and away from goal using body shape
  • Be alert and keep the ball and defender in sight
  • Get the tackle in when possible
  • Make the forwards slow down and face the server

Progressions

Give forwards a time limit to score

Allow the server to play inside area

Defenders can play into goals on outside

Game Training (40 mins)

Defending the direct counter vs 2 strikers

Objectives:

  • Look to defend the two strikers by forcing them into less dangerous zones (wide)

How to Play:

  • Blue team starts in Possession attacking the goal on edge of 18 yard box
  • Red team keeper should look to hit the two strikers as early as possible
  • If Ball goes out of area start with a pass infield

Coaching Points

  • Look for angle of kicking from goalkeeper and their defenders
  • Side on body position with ball and forward in view
  • No pressure on the ball drop 5-10 yards
  • If they try and play on floor midfield look to screen pass into forwards
  • Keeper to communicate if they can get in to clear ball 
  • Stay narrow and compact when losing ball
  • Shuffle across and cancel spaces

Progressions:

  • Time limit of 20 seconds for reds to score
  • Time limit of 10 seconds to intercept forward players
