Warm-Up (15 mins)

Warm-Up: SAQ w/ a Ball

Total Duration: 15 minutes

 4 Stations:

  • 3 mins per station, then rotate
  • 5-6 players per station
Station 1:
  • Shuffle through flags (33).

  • Pop out to one side, receive pass with first touch across the width of the gate, pass back with opposite foot.
  • Switch sides every time you go through it.

Station 2:

  • Skill through the cones (croqueta, scissor).
  • Up-back-through combination play.
  • Switch sides every time you go through it.

Station 3:

  • Both feet in each ladder space.
  • Combination play with target player.

Station 4:

  • Both feet in + out in each space (44).
  • Pop out to one side, receive pass, roll ball across the width of the gate, pass back with opposite foot.
  • Switch sides every time you go through it.

Technical Skill (10 mins)

Technical Skill: Ball Striking & Shooting

Total Duration: 10 minutes (3 rounds of 3 minutes with a break in between to add in coaching points).

  • First round = let players get used to the activity
  • Rounds 2 and 3 = competition (first to 10 goals)

Crossing & Finishing - Unopposed Exercise

  • 2 groups going at the same time (blue and pink). One to each goal.
  • Player A plays a leading pass out to Player B. Player B takes a good first touch that attacks the endline.
  • Player B cuts the ball back to the Red Zone, on the ground, as Player A times their run to attack the ball and finish in one touch.
  • Then Player A plays out to Player C and they do the same.
  • Players rotate lines.

Technical Coaching Points

  • Weight of pass
  • Passing with the inside of the foot
  • Turning hips before crossing
  • One touch finish: open up inside of the foot, lock ankle, head down and over the ball, hips facing the goal
  • Using the correct foot to score
  • Timing of the run

Technical Skill (Progression) (10 mins)

Technical Skill: Ball Striking & Shooting

Total Duration: 10 minutes (3 rounds of 3 minutes with a break in between to add in coaching points).

  • First round = let players get used to the activity
  • Rounds 2 and 3 = competition (first to 10 goals)

Crossing & Finishing - Adding Trailing Defender

  • Now the trailing defender (red) sprints in when the ball gets played from A to B.
  • If the defender wins it from player B, try to counter out to player C, and vise versa.

Technical Coaching Points

  • Player A must play a leading pass
  • Player B's first touch to attack the endline and get body in to win the space
  • Turning hips before crossing
  • One touch finish: open up inside of the foot, lock ankle, head down and over the ball, hips facing the goal

Opposed Activity (20 mins)

Opposed Activity: Attacking Principles

Total Duration: 20 minutes (3 rounds of 5 minutes with a break in between to add in coaching points). Rotate attacking roles each round.

Description: 3v2+GK. Game starts with blue #9 playing out to either the #7 or #11. The defender from the same side sprints in as a trailing defender, working on the same scenario as the Technical Skill Progression Exercise.

If the red team recover the ball, they counter out to the small goals. If the goalkeeper makes the save, the game restarts from the top.

Team Principle: Attack the endline and play diagonal crosses on the ground to the ‘red zone’

Counter Principle: Pressure, cover

Coaching Points

  • Encourage the #7 and #11 to take on the 1v1 and not pass the ball too soon, until they get to the endline
  • If #7 or #11 have to pass inside: quick combination to get in behind or a quick switch of play to find the open space on the other side.
  • For the runners in the box: timing of the run, finishing techniques
  • For the reds: #4 delay and wait for #2 or #3 to recover inside. If #4 chooses to step and press, #2 or #3 have to quickly rotate and cover.

Conditioned Game (20 mins)

Opposed Activity: Attacking Principles

Total Duration: 20 minutes (3 rounds of 6 minutes with a break in between). Rotate roles each round.

Description: 4v4+4 (2 outside neutrals and 2 inside neutrals). Outside neutrals are encouraged to dribble in and attack the endline when they receive the ball. Attacking team gets 3 points if they score from a cross in 1 touch. All other goals count as 1.

Team Principle: Attack the endline and play diagonal crosses on the ground to the ‘red zone’

Counter Principle: Pressure, cover

Coaching Points

  • Encourage the wide neutrals to take on the 1v1 and not pass the ball too soon, until they get to the endline
  • For the runners in the box: timing of the run, finishing techniques
  • For the defenders: defend the red zone and get your body shape facing forward when the ball is wide.
