Skill practice:
In this game called 'Octopus Game', the players are told that there is treasure (small cones) in the ocean on the far side of the pitch. They have to collect the treasure and bring it back to the beach, one piece at a time, by dribbling past the big octopus (coach), who will move from side to side attempting to steal their ball. If players use proper dribbling technique, with small touches enabling them to change direction quickly, they can beat the octopus. The octopus may only move within the shaded area in the diagram.
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
The players can be divided into two teams (two types of fish), with the winning team that which collects the most treasure. If the octopus steals players' footballs, it will keep it for a few seconds, therefore slowing players down on their quest for treasure. This incentivises players to dribble skillfully and keep their ball away from the octopus.

Small-sided game:
Players take it in turns to play a standard 1v1 game in which they must score in the opponent's goal. They are encouraged to utilise the skills developed in the session, dribbling their ball past their opponent before scoring.
Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):
Starting with a 1v1 is deemed appropriate to introduce this young age group to the small-sided game format. After some time, the game can progress to 2v2 and 3v3, with the same emphasis on dribbling past the opponent to create chances to score.
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
Scores are counted in this game. The coach awards a point for each goal, and a bonus point to players who dribble past an opponent before scoring.

Technical practice (10 mins)
Technical practice:
A number of gates (pairs of cones) are spread out across the playing area. First, players are asked to run as fast as possible through the gates until they have run through 15 gates. Players are encouraged to keep their heads up and change direction after each gate.
Next players are asked to perform the same exercise with a ball. They dribble through 15 gates, using a proper dribbling technique with emphasis on soft touches, inside and outside of the foot.
Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):
For a more challenging exercise for the U6 age group, players are then taught how to perform a drag back turn. They are asked to dribble their ball through each gate, before stopping their ball on the other side of the gate and rolling the ball backwards and turning their body to go back through the gate and continue dribbling. They will perform this drag back move in 10 gates.
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
If players are comfortable with the skill, a reward may be provided for the first player to finish 15 dribbles and bring their ball back to the white line.
