WU: Race Game (10 mins)

Organization:

  • 2 Fields, 10X18yds
  • 2, 2yd Gates on the corners of the defender's line (yd. 0-2, & 16-18)
  • 4 teams, 2 teams per field.
  • Attacking team lines up on attacker's corner (0yd)
  • Defending team lines up on defender's corner (0yd)

Instructions:

  • 1st Attacking player makes eye contact with defending player.
  • Attacker enters space
  • Defender enters space
  • Attacker scores by running through either yellow gate before getting tagged by defender
  • Defender scores by tagging attacker before attacker runs through either yellow gate.
  • Teams are encouraged to nominate a captain to keep track of your team's points
  • As soon as one player's round is finished, next player is encouraged to go.
  • After your round is finished, go around the activity & return to line.
  • 7 seconds to score, or the point goes to the defender
  • 1:30 rounds
  • After 1:30, attackers move to defend, defenders move to attack, we add up the total from those two rounds, & the team with more points wins.

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Do we want to be Proactive or Reactive? (Proactive; to make decisions, be in control, make the defender reactive to you.)
  • How can we be Proactive here? (Sprinting/Exploding into space to give the defender momentum; getting the defender moving)
    • Why does a defender with momentum, give us control? (Opportunity to evaluate & make decisions based on time/space)
    • Best move in the game: Sprinting straight through; if you are faster than your opponent, be faster than your opponent. If you aren't faster than your opponent, what do you have to be? (Smarter than your opponent; Double-Movement convincing the defender we are going for one gate, then cutting back to the other)
  • What are some ways to convince the defender we are going to a specific gate? (Deception: Explosive movement, looking toward a gate, shoulders & hips, body feint, deep lunge/stride)

Progressions:

  • Tighter Space
  • 2 defenders; no more gates, simply need to cross the defender's line.

Regressions:

  • Larger Space
  • Defender Begins on the ground, has to get up & catch attacker

  • Timed: each time you complete activity in less than 7 touches, your team gets a point. (6 touches, 5 touches).
