Description

Atalanta's 3-4-1-2 under Gian Piero Gasperini

  • Wing-backs maintain constant width
  • Attacking overloads created in wide zones by a CB, midfielder and a forward entering the zone to build-up play
  • Maintain width irrespective of which side the ball is on - allowing Atalanta to switch play quickly through the centre
  • When building from the back, a CM will drop deep allowing one of the wide CBs to push higher and wider
  • In the attacking third, a CM will step up or switch with a CF coming deep. This creates a rough 3-2-5 shape when attacking.
  • Multiple rotations and movements pull the opposition's defence apart and leave space for penetrative runs in dangerous central areas
  • The two CFs will often pull out wide to retain width, create an attacking overload or to award the CAM more space centrally.
