Warm Up 1 (10 mins)

Organization

- All players in a 20 x 20 area

- All players have a ball

Activity

 - All players dribble their ball around the area getting lots of touches on the ball

 - As they move around the coach will call go at which point the players have to change direction and accelerate with the ball

- Make this activity more specific by adding different skills and turns e.g start with on the coaches call the players must perform a scissors and accelerate in to the space. This age range may not get the techniques perfect, however that's okay. Focus on the changes of direction and speed and add little technique bits of advice where possible.

- Progress by adding different Techniques which they will, then add to each other, resulting in the players performing 5-6 turns/skills back to back

This warm up is focused on the players having time with the ball at their feet and learning to manipulate with changes of speed and direction. Depending on the level of players that you have you may start without the ball and build up to the ball with the focus remaining on the changes of speed and direction.

Warm Up 2 (10 mins)

Organization

- Players in pairs line up opposite each other in the middle of a 20x30 box

- One ball between the pair

- Pairs stand around 3 yards apart

Activity

- The players are numbered 1-2, and stand opposite each other on their toes

- On the coaches call of a number the number that the coach calls will spin and attempts to get to the line behind them before the rest of the same number on their side.

- Whichever player makes it first gets the point

- This is then repeated for 1-2 minutes with the players racing to the lines in different ways. The coach may say that the players have to run to the line backwards or they have to roll at least once on the way, etc.

Progression

 - The number that is called continues to do the same action and run to their line. The difference is that their partner will now attempt to beat them to that line. If your number is called you run to your line, if its not you run to the opposite line.

Progression

- Introduce a ball so that the players are manipulating a ball at their feet and when the coach calls the numbers they need to dribble their ball with them.

This warm up is all about the players having fun while developing quick reactions to triggers. The trigger in this instance is the coaches call of a number. Once we add in the ball we are en looking for players that are able to manipulate the ball and show off their dribbling/running with the ball abilities.

Warm Up 3 (10 mins)

Organization:

Players spread out inside a 25 x 25 area

Players get in to pairs and number themselves 1 and 2

1 cone and 1 ball between the pair

Activity

- Player 1 has the ball

- Player 2 has the cone

- Player 1 dribbles around the area, player two will attempt to throw their cone to hit their partners ball.

- If the cone thrower is successful the two players will then switch roles and continue to play.

- The player with the ball at the end of the game is the winner and get a point. The player with the most points after -5 attempts is the winner.

This is a fun warm up that will get the players thinking about lifting their head as they dribble, protecting their ball, and changes of direction and speed. There is a safety aspect to this and coaches will have to make sure the cone throwers are keeping their cones below knee height.

Warm Up 4 (10 mins)

Organization:

Create 5 lines of cones that are all 3 cones in length with 5 yards between each cone

- Place players in pairs or 3's and have them line up behind a set of cones

Activity

- The players will take part in relay races looking at different movements, changes of direction.

- The players may be asked to run to the first cone and back, hop to a different cone, run backwards, run through the cones in different patterns.

- All movements will be focused on the players developing physical literacy skills

Progression

- Each player will have a ball and complete relay races with the ball at their feet.

- The first few races should focus on getting to any cone and back and learning to keep the ball under control.

- To progress, ask the players to turn with different parts of their feet when they get to the cones. Some players will be able  to do this and some wont.

This will be a fun warm up and through giving the teams points for the winners will create a sense of competition also. There will be cheating at this age and so keep and eye out for it and reward those players that are doing the exercise fully. Keep it fun!

Warm Up 5 (10 mins)

Organization

 - Create a 25 x 25 area

 - All players will start in the area without a ball

Activity

- Players will move around the area and listen for the coach to call a number. The number will be between 1-4.

 - Whatever number the coach calls the players will place that amount of hands or feet on the floor without falling over. e.g 3 maybe two feet and one hand or two hands and 1 foot.

 - The coach can make the challenge harder if they want to by saying you must have a hand involved when the number is above 1.

 - During this the coach may also ask the players to move in different ways e.g. skipping, hopping jumping.

Progression

- Add the ball and adjust from numbers to body parts.

- If the coach calls belly it will be the first player to stop their ball and place their belly on the ball to get the point.

This is another fun warm up where players will be developing physical literacy and movement skills. Once the ball is added it will give the players the opportunity to manipulate the ball in addition to the physical literacy.

Warm Up 6 (10 mins)

Organization

- Create a 25 x 25 yard area

- All players begin in the area

- All players balls are spread out through the area but not at the players feet

Activity

- Players will move around the area in different  ways

- On the coaches call the players will visit a ball and perform a different movement that has been predetermined

- The players will attempt to visit as many balls as possible in 30 seconds to complete the same movement. At the end of the 30 seconds the players see who was able to complete the most balls.

- When asking who achieved the highest numbers be sure to start low to make sure all players are included.

Movements

- Toe taps, inside of the feet touches, scissors

- Ask the players movements they think would be relative to the game

This warm up will be quick and explosive if the players are competitive. Their will be players that attempt to cheat or are not able to complete the movement properly and so their needs to be patience while also making sure clear demos are given so players know what they are being asked to complete.
