Session Objective | in this session, I aim to improve our players' ability to create and attack space behind an opposing player who is pressing from in front. Tactically, players will be challenged to solve problems using 1v1 skills when playing out from the back.
Coaches, aim to keep coaching points short & simple. Go in, deliver your point, affect the players on the ball, around the ball and away from the ball then get out. As often as possible look to coach on the run and let them play, however, if play needs to be stopped during tactical component and skill game, then address problems as follows: -
spot problem | stop play | correct using demonstration, guided discover and q&a | play is live off my touch "and we play".

Explanation
5 balls to start; get all 5 from the safe zone at the back, into the safe zone at the halfway line. Players are free to transfer the ball, in any way they think they will achieve the most success. The only rule is that the ball must be dribbled, in control, into the safe zone. Teams earn a point each time they successfully transfer a minimum of 1 soccer ball. If the defending team win possession The game continues until defenders have won all balls.

Warm-up (10 mins)
Frame
Ball manipulation, and mastery, in tight space; exploit space quickly when it's available.
Explanation
Two 10x10 squared areas. 5 players in each square. All players dribble unopposed inside the area as the coach challenges them to complete various ball mastery skills when space is limited.
Ball mastery skills
1. Dynamic toe tap variations (coach holds up fingers, player call out number).
2. Sole rolls.
3. V pushes (drag/push).
"you might be thinking why are we doing this, but no matter what age you are, being able to manipulate the ball in tight areas is so, so important - we're seeing loose touches here; it's very much about reducing those".
4. Scissors; now, let's take it on the move just one or two and move.
5. Cruyff turn; both feet / arm up / exaggerate hip rotation.
6. L turn; both feet, outside push away. Check shoulders before.
7. Inside + Outside cuts.
Progression
1. Spatial awareness: when space between two players becomes available, challenge players to drive quickly through gaps, towards the area boundary, before executing a turn. Repeat. Players score points for each successful completion.
2. Evading pressure: one player in each square is given a bib to hold - this players dribbles and avoids the other 4 chasers inside the area. Chasers attempt to bump the dribbler's ball with their own. Dribbler tries to find pockets of space to exploit and keep their ball alive. Once their ball is bumped or they leave the area, pass the bib to a new player and go again. NB: no striking at the dribblers ball, must dribble to bump.
Coaching Points
+ awareness of ball, space and opposition.
+ plenty of soft touches, close control.
+ accelerate quickly into space.
+ tight area, so if defenders are trying to set a trap - creativity and cleverness can set you free.
+ if we move the ball but stay in the same area, what might the defenders do? block you in and set a trap.
+ once you set with the ball, defenders will get compact. That's your cue to create a little chaos. Stop, stand them up, then move quickly into new space.
+ be unpredictable.
+ change speed, direction & tempo.
+ aim to execute skills at match speed.
