Objective: To work on developing speed of play, creativity and technique.
Organisation
Area: 10x10 yard box which players form a circle in.
Try to have 7v2 and variations of this ratio.
How to play
Players should try to keep the ball using the minimum amount of touches and keeping possesion away from the diefenders.
Coaching Points
Stay on the balls of their feet.
Open stance ready to receive the ball, to be able to pass the ball to both sides or forwards.
Always be focused and think about your next pass.

Objective: The three centre backs work on taking up the appropriate positions according to the position off the ball.
Organisation
Area: Half of a full size pitch.
Using defenders and a midfield four.
How to play
The red players are in positions indicated by the red cones and pass the ball to each other. The three centre backs shift (mainly horizontally) and take up positions according to the position of the ball.
Coaching Points
The players use this practice to help them learn to provide cover as well as balance.
It is very important that there is a high level of cohesion between the three centre backs so they have synchronised movements.
The centre backs need to read the different tactical situations depending on where the pass is delivered.

Progression
As the practice progresses the red players (after passing to each other) direct the ball to the defenders. As soon as the ball is directed to one of the centre backs the other two should take up the appropriate positions as if this player had an opponent to contest - move inwards from their position and back to provide cover.
The new player in possession receives and after a couple of seconds passes the back to one of the red players and the sequence starts again.

Objective: To take up the appropriate positions accroding to the position of the ball and to mark the opposition forward.
How to play
In this practice we add the No 9 white forward.
The three centre backs not only shift horizontally and take up positions according to the position of the ball but also have to mark the forward. As soon as the pass is made to the forward, the first defender (the defender who contests the forward) puts pressure on the ball while the other two provides cover according to the situation.
The forward (9) receives the pass, holds the ball for a couple of seconds, passes back to one of the red midfielders and moves again to receive the next potential pass. The red midfielders can also pass in behind the right and left centre backs to test whether the defenders can provide immediate cover.
Coaching points
The centre backs need to mark the forward according to his position, the position of the ball, the goal and the position of their teammates.

Organisation
The session is set up with a 5v6 (+GK) in 4 zones as shown in the diagram. The 3 blue centre backs and the red forward are positioned in the high zone. The defensive mildfielder is inside the blue zone. There are four red midfielders and two blue attacking midfielders in the low red zone.
How to play
The practice starts by passing to a red midfielder in the red zone. The aim for the reds (4v2) is to create an open ball situation by receiving unmarked in the red zone or by running forwards with the ball. The reds try to score and the blue team have to defend the open ball situation.
The defenders have to react according to the tactical situation and use vertical shifts whenever necessary in order to prevent the forward from receiving the pass behind. As soon as the ball leaves the red zone, the defensive midfielder closes down the man in possession. The red player can pass back mto his teammates in the red zone which creates a closed ball situation, and the blue defenders should then move forwards together.
Only one red player can move out of the red zone and the two blue attacking midfielders must stay within the red zone throughout.
Progression
Add an extra red forward in the high zone to create a 3v2 situation instead of 3v1.
