Description

This is a Whole-Part-Whole session template.

Start with the whole practice. Then break down the skill by working through one of the 2 Part practice options (or any other that is relevant). Finally, go back to the whole practice again to see if they can improve their penetrative passes to score.

Whole Practice

ORGANISATION:

- balls positioned at the half way line of the playing area.

- 4 teams of 3 players. Can also be played 4v4s in a smaller area.

Objective:

Both ends of the field play simultaneously with two teams attacking the goals at either end. Teams play 3v3s at either end. In the diagram above, red and yellow are attacking. Blue and green are defending. When the ball goes out, the attacking team returns to the central area and retrieves a ball from the half way line. If the defending team manages to recover/win the ball they can score by playing out to the half way line and placing their foot on the ball. Alternatively small goals can be placed on the half way line, or if they retain the ball and make a certain number of passes they score a point.

SCORING:

The first team to score wins. When there is a score rotate the teams. I.e. Green and Blue now attacking

Key Points:

- Encourage players to be creative!

- Diagonal runs and Overlaps, take-over’s, 1-2’s to disorientate the defense.

- Play fast and at a high tempo to not let the defensive line get set and organised.

- Promote individuality, get the ball wide and expose defenders 1vs1!

- Through passes weighted behind the defense.

- Timing of supporting runs

- Quality of finishing, hit the target with follow ups.

Part Practice Option 1

Organisation:

- approx 20x20yrd square (adjust accordingly to ability and number of players)

- 3 teams (2 on the outside, 1 in the middle)

- 1 ball for each outside team, 1 ball for each player in the middle

Objective: To find a pass through the middle players to team members on the other side of the square

Progression Examples:

1) Players in the middle not trying to block the passes through the square

2) Players in the middle can try and get in the way of the passes

3) Can players be creative with their passes?

4) How many passes across in 1 minute? etc

Key Points:

- Be patient with the pass - dribble/pass to partner on outside until a space opens up

- Weight/accuracy of the pass

Part Practice Option 2

Organisation -

- 2 teams, split between 2 sections of the area

- each team has a ball

Objective: Teams now try to play through each other and look after the ball.

Each time the ball is played through 1 goal. Play first to 3,5 or 10 depending on the group.

Progression Examples:

1) Start Unopposed

2) Allow other team to intercept a pass fromthe opposite team

Key Points:

-If they can't play forwards keep the ball moving in their zone until a gap appears to play forwards.

- Play the game with head up as much as possible to help make quicker decisions

- Be patient

- Out of possession - Try to take up better positions to support
