Technical Training (15 mins)

Serve and Receive Long-Flighted Balls

Receive -> Pass -> Move: Players serve flighted passes to their teammate, then check awayt a few yards to make space. After receiving the ball, player turn and accelerates with the ball away from teammate. Supporting player stretches the field while keeping an eye on teammate to turn back to them with the ball, then show for a ball to be played on their foot, or run into space for next pass.

Coaching Points:

1. Prepare your body to receive the ball: heels off the ground, knees slightly bent

2. Strike through the center of the ball with the instep

3. Show with the hand and call for the ball where you would like ball to be played

4. Clean first touch leads to a positive second touch

5. Check away and wait for teammate to show that they are going to serve the ball

*Make sure to include elements of a dynamic warm-up with the players (leg swings, hip mobility, high knee tucks, bent-over calf stretch)

4v2 + GK Flank Play (20 mins)

Divide players into two equal teams playing in a box-on-box field arrangement. Incorporate goalkeepers if available, or rotate through with all field players equally. Regular soccer rules apply without corner kicks. The next attack always begins at the edge of the grid with a new attacking team of four players.

Game:

1. Attacking team plays a ball around the grid to flank player, who quickly dribbles to the endline for a cross

2. Two supporting attacking enter the field on/after the flank player's first positive touch so there is no offside infraction. Oppositie flank player also joins the attack.

3. Two defenders enter the grid and prepare to clear the ball to the remaining two attacking (resting players)

4. One striker must present a near-post run; the other must present a far-post run; delay your run so you do not arrive too early

5. You can add one chasing defender on the outside to provide additional pressure on the flank player

Coaching Points:

1. Same as 1st activity

2. Flank player must prepare the ball for a quality service, including having hips turned towards the targets

3. Serve a low-drive ball to near-post if that is the best option; high-flighted ball to far post is that is the best option

4. Timing of runs into the box
