Football/Soccer Session (Moderate): Make a wall pass (Start Time: 2022-07-13 17:30:00)
Description
Against Perth we were too reliant on our wingers and strikers creating opportunities by dribbling at the opponent and missed multiple opportunities for our midfielders to play wall passes.
This session aims to show when and how to make a wall pass to create and attacking opportunity.

20 mins
Structure / Organisation
- 4v4 + wide players in channels.
- Wide players can't tackle each other to start, but if a defender is in front of you, you must pass
- Ball must be touched by at least one wide player in the move for a goal to count.
- Only an attacking player can enter the goal area to start with.
Team Task
When a defender prevents you from progressing by dribbling, play a wall pass with a supporting teammate to get past your immediate opponent.
Players Tasks
When a wide player receives the ball, can you move level into a close supporting position to offer a wall pass.
When you play a pass to a supporting teammate, move forward away from your immediate opponent.
After playing to a supporting teammate can you alter the angle of your run to proving an option for a wall pass.
If the player who requested a 1-2 is not ready to receive yet, can you control the ball and play when they are past their marker?
If the defender reads the wall pass and follows your teammate, can you control and shield the ball and play elsewhere.
Progressions
- Wide players can switch in and out of channel.
- Defending is allowing in channel to allow for 1v1 opportunities and make defending the wall pass more realistic.
- Overload/underload team to adjust fairness.
- Players have touch restriction to ensure they move the ball quicker.
- Remove channels and see if players keep shape.

Do players adjust their positioning and body shape to provide a wall pass, or do they try call for them just where they are?
Progressions
- If no second keeper, use two small popup goals instead.
- Reintroduce wide zones to encourage wall passes and through balls into crossing areas.
- Bonus point if goal is scored after a wall pass in build up.
