Learning Objectives
|
Technical Lots of technical repetition of passing and receiving |
|

|
Physical Lots of movement, agility and balance being worked on in the short movements |
|
Psychological Players no have more to think about with more passes in the pattern |
|
Social Still fun elements in the challenge of getting as many passes as they can, lots of communication needed |
10 mins
A continuation of the previous practice with a different passing pattern.
Players pass to the player on the cone clockwise to them, that player lays it back and the original passer plays the ball diagonally to the player across diagonally from them. Short, short, long passing sequence.
Players are told to not move too close after the first pass so that the pass diagonally is easier.
Like the first practice, players are challenged to get as many passes as they can in a minute.
The players are explained the new pattern on one square and told to play again after a water break.

|
Psychological Decisions need to be made on when to try and progress the ball to the other side |
|
Social Lots of communication needed, team based game so team work needed |

Details
- Field split into 3 sections, 18x30, 9x30 and 18x30 - A large area size to allow opportunities to pass through space and keep the ball.
- Players are in 3 teams of 4 and split into the 3 sections.
- The teams in the left and right sections are 'the attackers' and the team in the middle section are 'the defenders'
- As shown by the arrows, the team must make 4 passes and then pass the ball across to the other team with a grounded pass.
- The middle (defending) team can send one player into the attacking teams section to try and win the ball, the players in the middle must stop the team from passing the ball through their middle section to the other side but cannot leave their section.
- Players can freely pass the ball through the sides of the field, as signified by the shaded area. Defenders are not allowed in these sections.
- Once the yellow team gets the ball to the blue team, they must try to get 4 passes and then pass the ball back to the yellows, red team can send a player in to defend.
- If the defending team wins the ball then they swap places with the team who lost the ball. The coach will pass another ball in to keep the session flowing.
- Players are allowed to pass through the middle section without going through the wide are but are encouraged to begin with to use the channels.
Progressions
- Remove the channels
- Increase the number of passes before they can pass across
- Allow defenders to send more than 1 player in to defend
Regressions
- Widen the channels
- Decrease the number of passes before they can pass across
Coaching Points
- Being patient to find an opening to play through the defence and break lines, do we have to try and force it after 3 passes?
- Always being an option if we do not have the ball
- Using wide areas to progress the ball up the field.
Coaching Instructions
- Players will be told the practice out on the field as they have done a similar practice when they were working on running with the ball
- A demonstration of the practice will be shown before the players start playing
- Players will be told about the channels and encouraged to use them to break lines
Coaching Interventions
- Use of fly bys and 1 to 1s at the side to help players who may be struggling to break lines
- If teams are trying to force the ball, use freezes to ask questions on if we need to do that.
- Use a freeze to highlight a team doing really well, ask the players what that team just did really well.

Details
- 6 v 6 game
- Field size - 45 x 30 yds
- Field split into 3 15x30 yd sections
- Players must pass the ball into the next section, if they pass the ball into that section, they can stay in there to create an overload. They must return to their section when the ball leaves that section or if the other team wins the ball back.
- The only way to progress the ball is by passing the ball into the next section.
- For the first 5 minutes, teams must get 2 passes before they can pass the ball to the next section. After 5 minutes, teams can progress the ball with a pass without having to get 2 passes in their section.
Progressions
- Increase the number of passes that they must get before they can progress the ball
- After 10 minutes, remove the sections
Regressions
- Allow the attacking team to move freely between sections to create overloads.
Coaching Points
- Recognising the opportunity to play 'through the lines' and progress the ball
- Being patient on when to progress the ball
- Making sure to move into next section after the progress the ball to create an overload.
Coaching Instructions
- Players will be shown the drill on a whiteboard before they are sent out to the field.
- The rules will be explained and players will be asked if they understand
- Players will be sent out into their sections and the game will be demonstrated.
- Players will be reminded of what we worked in in the technical practice where players had to move forward to the next cone after they pass, which they can use to move into the next section.
Coaching Interventions
- If there is not much success from a lot of players, freezes will be used to demonstrate how they can progress the ball again
- Fly bys and 1 to 1s at the side used throughout for players who may be struggling
- A freeze will be used to highlight really good play and players doing what the game design is looking for

- 6 players on each square, 1 player on 2 cones and 2 players on 2 cones.
- Players must pass the ball clockwise around the square and follow their pass.
- Players must move off the cone with a sharp movement away from 'the defender'
Progressions
- Add another ball to each square
- Challenge the players to take one touch around the cone and then pass
- Make it a challenge to see which square can get as the most passes in a minute
Regressions
- Allow players to dribble closer before they pass the ball to decrease the length of pass
Coaching Points
- Sharp movement off the cone to move away from the defender
- Proper passing technique to the back foot
- Fast paced to add realism
- Making sure to follow pass after passing
Coaching Instructions
- Players will be put out on one square with the other square watching as the drill is explained
- The game is demonstrated, players are allowed to play without being told to move away from the cone to start with
- After it has been demonstrated the other square sets up and starts playing as well.
Coaching Interventions
- Fly bys and 1 to 1s used for players who are not moving off the cone to receive the ball
- Use of freezes if there are multiple players in both squares struggling with a certain aspect of the drill
- Freeze one square if it is just one square struggling
- Freeze to introduce the challenge to play in one touch and then another freeze to start challenge of most passes in a minute.
