Tackling techniques 1 (30 mins)
Tackling techniquesSetup as shown for part 1 - cones/strips between 25 and halfway or 25y in length elsewhere on the pitch
Demonstration of footwork required in tackling in close quarters (CP1)
Block Tackle 1 (A starting point) (5 mins)- Player in Orange starts with the ball and jogs a slow carry in long zig zag as shown changing direction twice
- Player in Blue tracks player in low block position (CP2) pivoting when attacker changes direction to track their progress across the grid
- Repeat swapping roles for 4 reps each
Block Tackle 2 (5 mins)Block Tackle 3 (5 mins)
Jab Tackle 1 (5 mins)
- Setup as above
- Player in Orange starts with the ball and jogs a slow carry in long zig zag as shown changing direction twice
- Player in Blue tracks player in jab tackle position (CP3) pivoting when attacker changes direction to track their progress across the grid
Jab Tackle 2 (5 mins)- As above, move competitive, Orange player is trying to get past the Blue player
- The Blue player is not allowed to make a tackle but must always be able to track the ball carrier
- The Orange player is not allowed to run straight and must run in diagonals but may make as many turns as they want
Jab tackle 3 (5 mins)Coaching Points:
CP1
Footwork is a slide of feet across the floor, not a bounce
Pivot is a rotation using back foot as pivot point
Shoulders, hips and stick are always facing the point of contact - ie ball
CP2
Left hand at the top of the stick
Left hand is on the ground just outside the left foot
Right hand is halfway down the stick holding the stick to aid stick movement
When making the block tackle the stick stays flat and parallel on the ground and pushed with 2 hands towards the ball, this should only occur when the player decides it is the right time to make a tackle
Player is close enough to apply pressure, less than a stick's length away from the ball - close playing distance specific for that player
Ask question re playing distance - what does it mean to each player, difference between playing distance and too close, too far away. Looking for not too close but close enough to engage in the tackle
CP3Left hand is at the top of the stickStick is upright pointing the head at the ball Right hand is halfway down the stick holding the stick when moving left and right but loose when executing the jabJab tackle is extension of stick using left hand only then bringing stick back to 2 hand gripFeet stay in position and do not lunge forward to allow for direction change
