Arrival Activity - Ball Tag (10 mins)

Ball Tag

  • The red team works together, throwing the ball to eachother to try and tag a black player.
  • The red team can only tag a black player if they have possession of the ball in their hands and are right beside that player.
  • If a black player is tagged by a red player they need to do a lap around the grid and are back in the game.
  • Switch teams every few minutes.
Coaching Points:
  • How can we communicate with our teammates?
  • What works better? Short or long passes?
  • How can we trap the black team?

Things to Consider:

  • Make the space smaller if the red team is struggling.
  • Make the space bigger if the black team is struggling.

SSG - 3 Line Game (15 mins)

Set up:

  • Grid is 15x15 boxes on the sides, 5/10 x 15 in the middle (size dependant on age and skill of players and how many players in the boxes).
  • Team divided into 3 teams. 2 on the sides and one in the middle.

Organization:

  • Coach plays ball to one of the teams on the sides.
  • Team in the middle sends defenders into the side grid (1 at first, build to 2 if ability allows).
  • Offensive team makes a set number of passes (3-5) and then the goal is to send the ball to the opposite side.
  • The pass to the opposite side can be through on the ground (remaining defensive players are permitted to intercept this pass) or over the middle group.
  • If they succeed then they score 1 point and stay where they are, defensive team then goes to challenge the ball on opposite side. If the defensive team wins the ball, they take the place of the attacking team and play continues as it started.

Details:

  • Shape of the attacking team (fill the box and be at good supporting positions)
  • Communication on offense
  • Proper body shape to receive the pass
  • If 2 defenders closing, look to split
  • Don't have to pass to opposite side after requisite number of passes, ensure the right opportunity

SSG - Crossing Game (15 mins)

Set-Up:

- 2 Goals

- Add in channels on the outside of the playing area for the servers of the ball.

Description:

- Divide team in half and have each team send 2 players into the attacking channels of the pitch.

- Goal for each team is to get wide with the ball before they can score.

- The wide channel is split in 2 so that the defensive channel player knows that they cannot go in and interfere with the attacking edge player.

- Channel players have 2 touches to get the ball in play either via cross or simple ball to feet (1 touch to control, 1 to cross).

Progressions:

1. Ball must go to one of the edges before you can score (this may be the only progression you do today)

2. Ball must go to both edges before you can score

3. Player who passes into the channel must take their place

4. If you want to make this more about defending crosses you can focus on the pressure on the cross and/or how you like to mark the players attacking the cross

Language:

- Edges (wide areas)

- Timing of run (attacking the cross)

- Weight of pass

- First-time

- Communication (first post, back post)

- 2nd 6-yard box

Final Game - 5v5 or 6v6 (20 mins)

After completing the Crossing Game, remove the cones and let the boys play! Encourage players to work on the theme of the session (possession, getting into wide areas to cross the ball, etc.). Do your best to not intervene.

*Keep it Competitive! Play mini games, losing team has to; run, do burpees, sit-ups, push-ups, etc. Winning team does half the exercise. Change the teams up if things are one sided.
