TRANSITION TO ATTACK

FUNCTION

This is a transition to attack drill which focuses on winning the ball and either driving forward  directly into the space behind the defensive line, or securing the first pass to enable the team to then break the defensive line.

  • 14 + players and 2 goal keepers.
  • 6v4 + 2GK play on each rotation - remaining players waiting to replace the defending team immediately after transition attack takes place.
  • Playing area is the width of the penalty box, with two ends each the size of the 18 yard box, and a central playing area of same width x 15m (adjust to suit ability).
  • Play starts with the coach playing a pass to the team of 6, here the Yellow team in the central playing area.  Yellow simply try to retain possession, while the pressing team Purple press to win possession.
  • When Purple win possession they look to break either defensive line (blue lines) and score in either goal. After they shoot the 4 Purple players swap with 4 waiting players.
  • If Purple win the ball but lose it again before breaking the defensive line they continue to try and win the ball back once again.
  • Only one Purple player may enter the 18 yard area to try and score (player can either dribble into the 18 yard area or receive a pass in the area - the line is the 'offside' line).  No Yellow player can exit the central area.

Progression

1. If the possession team Yellow lose the ball, but win it back before Purple break the defensive line, then Yellow can immediately attack either goal, by a player dribbling over the defensive line or by passing to a teammate making an attacking run behind the defensive line.

2. If  the possession team Yellow can complete 10 passes they can now attack either goal (this should encourage/ensure Purple to press with intent and urgency)
