I love pattern play exercises because I also really like training triangle and diamond passing combinations so in pattern play you can work on diamond combination play but in more positional play and then also progress to finishing on goal which makes it more motivational & enjoyable for the players. And of course there are many many different combinations & patterns you can incorporate.
Whether it be 7v7, 9v9, or 11v11 - you setup your team in their positions/team shape on one side of the field. Players then perform different combinations on one side and then work on switching play quickly through different positions to attack on the weakside. All players continue to goal relative to their positions after the switch and work on finishing and finishing runs. You can have all positions of the team shape working & moving on the field at the same time , or you can just use a smaller unit group for the combination, switch, and finish instead of the whole team in bigger group.
Identify the key players to be responsible to switching play in your system and then work on combinations into those players to switch play and setup the attack. For me there are 3 main players; (1) CM , (2) CF , (3) FB/CB
You can have the opposite side players go to goal via 1v1 or quick combination.
You can choose to have them shoot, cross or cut back depending on your desired style of play.
For rotation of players, you can have a rotation where players rotate to a new position after a couple turns, or you can have multiple players in the same position who take turns every other ball.
