EQUIPMENT
Balls, cones, bibs, 2 goals
SETUP
Set rows of cones in the middle of a pitch to suit amount of players and ability
Two goals at either end.
THE PRACTICE
Players without the ball have to stop (DEFEND VS) the player on the ball getting passed them and reaching the end of each coned zone (shaded area) to earn a point.
Start off with players playing a 1v1 in the zones. Progress to a 2v2 by removing the red cones, then on to a 4v4 (5v4 in this situation) by removing all of the cones. Let each player have plenty of goes at being the defender
COACHING POINTS
By starting off 1v1 and in zones it allows focused coaching of basic defending.
.
DELAY- Coach the correct body position (not flat footed, being side on, on your toes. The nearest player should stride towards the player on the ball, don't jump in, leave yourself some room to counter the attackers' move and slow down the opposition. this allows for the rest of the defence to get back into shape and can slow soqn the attack.(this point can be looked at more in the 2v2 etc)
DENY – Deny attackers space, time and positioning close to the goal. Try to force them on to their wrong foot (how can we identify this?)
DEFLECT – Get in front of the ball when an attacker tries to cross or shoot
DEFEND – Can we make the tackle at the right moment to win the ball
