No Mans Land

Organisation:

  • 4 players with a ball are on a side each of a small square marked by cones.
  • 1 defenders stands in the middle of the area.
  • The attackers look to dribble to another side of the grid.
  • 1 point for going to either side, 3 points for dribbling across the area.
  • The defender can only tackle once an attacker is inside the grid.
Modify:
  • Add a second defender.
  • Only allow points for crossing the square (one side to the opposite).

Attacking KP's:
  • Soft touches on approach
  • Big touches to get past defender
  • Change of speed/direction
  • Head up - awareness

Defending: 
  • Jockey stance
  • 'Fast to slow' & 'High to low'

Mosquitos

Organisation:

  • 'Mosquitos' start with a ball and look to tag humans with their ball, passing it against their legs (below knee height)
  • If hit with a ball, the human becomes a mosquitos and the mosquitos becomes a human.

Modify:

  • Players can tag with a ball in their hands, they tag another player by touching them on the back with their ball (not throwing it).
Attacking KP's:
  • Striking the ball with inside of the foot/instep.
  • Body over the ball to keep it low
Questions:
  • What part of the foot should we hit the ball with?

Organisation:

  • Each player has a ball and scores by dribbling into one of the small squares in the area.
  • Wreck-it ralph, can be a coach/player or parent, looks to stop the players scoring by kicking their ball away.
  • If a players can is kicked by Wreck-it Ralph, they must do 10 toe taps before restarting.
Attacking KP's:
  • Soft touches to control
  • Big touches to get away from the defender
  • Play with head up
  • Change of speed/direction

  • Do we take big touches or small touches to get away from the defender?

Sharks & Minnows

Organisation:

  • Minnows (players) start with a ball on one side of the area (wider than it is longer)
  • The shark (coach in red) starts in the sea, the minnows try to get from one side of the sea to the other without the shark tagging their ball.
  • If the coach tags their ball, the minnow becomes a shark.

Attacking KP's:

  • Soft touches - control.
  • Big touches - get past the shark.
  • Playing with head up.
  • Change of direction/speed to get past the shark

  • How do we know what part of the sea to swim in?

Capture the Flag

Organisation:

  • Two teams line up facing each other as shown. They both have a base marked out by small cones (red & yellow).
  • On the coaches signal, each team try to capture as many balls and bring them back to their base (can dribble or pass to a teammate).
  • They can also steal balls from the other teams base and tackle the opponent stealing their ball.
  • After a certain amount of time (1 minute for example) the team with the most balls in their base wins.

Attacking KP's:

  • Soft touches - control.
  • Big touches - get past the shark.
  • Playing with head up.
  • Change of direction/speed to get past the defender.
  • Communication.
  • Quality Passing - Accuracy, Weight, Timing.

Defending:

  • Jockey Stance
  • Eyes on the ball
  • 'Fast to slow' & 'high to low'

Questions:

  • What is the best tactic your team can use to win this game? (allow teams to discuss this and play another game)

Ball-tag

Organisation:

  • One team is the attacking team and score by kicking their ball against one of the other teams balls.
  • The defending team must protect their ball through good control, dribbling and skill.
  • Change roles after 1 minute, make it a competition.
  • Encourage players to work as a team to score more points.

Modify:

  • Players can tag with a ball in their hands.
Attacking KP's:
  • Striking the ball with inside of the foot/instep.
  • Body over the ball to keep it low
  • Soft touches - close control
  • Big touches - get away from the defender
  • Shielding the ball - use your body to protect the ball
  • Change of direction/speed
Questions:
  • How can we work together as a team to score more points?

Shield Steal

Organisation:

  • Each player works with a partner in a small area as shown.
  • One player is in possession and looks to protect or 'shield' the ball from the defender.
  • The defender looks to 'steal the shield' from the attacker and keep it themselves.
  • Rotate roles after 1 minute.
Modify:
  • Change partners if a player is struggling or finding it too easy.

Attacking KP's:
  • Side on positioning.
  • Knees slightly bent.
  • Using arm to hold off the defender (like you're holding a shield).
  • Lean into the defender.
  • Use furthest foot from the defender to control the ball.

Defending:
  • Jockey stance
  • Eyes on the ball

  • Why do we control the ball with the farthest foot from the defender?

  • Players use their hands to pass the ball (throwing and catching).
  • Players can only take 2-3 steps when holding the ball.
Modify:
  • Allow players to score by volley/shot
  • Turnover if balls is dropped (for older players)

  • Attacking Movement - teammates
  • Playing with head up
  • Communication

Defending:
  • Arms up
  • Eyes on the ball
