Session Title:
Position-Specific Technical & Tactical Development
(Individual Development Plan – IDP Focused)
Target Positions (IDP Players):
Full-Back (FB)
Winger (Wide Attacker)
Central Midfielder (CM)
Centre-Back (CB)
Session Objective:
To develop technical execution and tactical awareness in position-specific roles through structured, opposed and semi-opposed scenarios. The focus is on receiving, decision-making, and role-specific execution both in and out of possession.
Session Organisation & Practice Design:
Pitch Layout:
Double box format with a 3-yard central transition zone and a red line at 50 yards to simulate depth and reset conditions
Unopposed clearance zone used to build in transitional moments and defensive decision-making under no pressure
Player Breakdown:
IDP Focused Players: FB, Winger, CM, CB
Non-IDP Players: 2 Goalkeepers, 4 additional players for functional support roles (either pressing, rotating, or combining in possession)
Equipment:
Tactical board/frame used to introduce and reinforce key learning outcomes pre-session
Cones/mannequins as positional references or to simulate opposition block lines if needed
Practice Duration:
4 blocks of 3 minutes each
90 seconds to 2 minutes active rest and feedback between blocks
Role rotation built into the practice—players switch between attacking and defending responsibilities to maximise understanding of both sides of the game
Specific player rotations (e.g., Miles & Brayden) to ensure load management and varied tactical exposure

Session Focus:
Aerial Duels, Second Balls, and Competitive Reactions in Limited Space
(Aligned with Player IDPs – Position-Specific Technical & Tactical Outcomes)
Individual Coaching Focus (Per Player IDP):
Defenders:
Timing of jump in the aerial duel
Body position: side-on stance for balance and elevation
Use of arms for elevation and protection (legal frame)
Contact point: attack the ball at the highest possible point
Directional heading: high and away into space or target area
Attackers:
Anticipation and reaction to second balls
Quick execution in tight areas (shots on target under pressure)
Effective use of body to shield and retain possession in duels
Timing and movement to arrive first or create separation from opponent
Session Breakdown & Structure:
Block 1 & 2 – Conditioned Practices (Semi-Opposed):
Ball 1: Coach plays an unopposed aerial clearance over the red line. If the ball lands in-field (between zones), play becomes live.
Ball 2: Ball is thrown in centrally for a 2v2 aerial duel.
Defenders aim to win the header and direct it into one of two designated mini-goals/target areas.
Attacking players aim to win second balls and exploit limited space to create a shot or maintain possession.
Constraint: Ball cannot be played across the central grid line – directional play only.
Ball 3: Drill is repeated with the same structure but from the opposite side, ensuring symmetrical exposure.
Block 3 & 4 – Opposed Game Format (Fully Live 4v4):
4v4 game within marked area involving both attackers and defenders.
Ball entry still follows the structured order (Ball 1: clearance, Ball 2/3: thrown-in duels).
Coach controls the duration and sequence of reps for intensity and realism.
Objective: Create repeated aerial and second-ball scenarios under game-like conditions.
Key Coaching Interventions:
Concurrent Coaching: Live feedback during play (e.g., “Get side-on!”, “Attack the ball early!”).
Terminal Feedback: Delivered between reps or blocks to reinforce decision-making and technical corrections.
Individual Interventions: 1-to-1 tailored feedback linked directly to the player's IDP.
Walkthroughs: Used to rehearse key movements, body shape, and positional cues without pressure.
