Key principles:

  • Shape relies on being in triangles, looking to create 2v1s across the pitch

Principles:

Must be PROACTIVE to everything. If we are reactive then we will be out of position and outnumbered at the back.

Must shift as a unit. We do not worry about opposition players on the opposite side of the pitch.

Number 1 priority is to not let the ball through the middle of the pitch, always try and force wide.

  • Force the ball out wide, ideally to their LHB.
  • Back 3 front marking
  • Right midfielder (number 9) shuffles across and blocks line ball (must travel when the ball moves in order to encourage pass to LHB).
  • When LHB receives the ball, attacking midfielder (number 7) presses the HB on the diagonal to stop the ball into the central midfielder.
  • Left midfielder (number 8) comes across, ready to mark the central midfielder or cut off the pass between LHB and RHB.
  • One forward (number 10) cuts the transfer across the top of the D, the other (number 11) is cutting the diagonal pass to the opposite HB.
  • Two defensive midfielders (numbers 5 and 6) are zonal marking, dealing with any players that come into their shaded zones (must be front marking when this happens). Remaining no further than 15m apart (imagine a piece of elastic attaching together)

Screen 3

FB looking to pass ball into screen, who is receiving strong to pass back to FB or roll and play a square pass to RHB.

Right midfielder starts wide, then leads inside so there is a long pass down the line for the RHB. One of the forwards must lead wide from their high position in order to stretch the game and get behind the defence (looking to attack the baseline).

Other forward should look to get into a position on the P-spot or back post to make the goal wider.

Opposite side midfielder is attacking the D to try and provide an overload.

Same principles apply to the other side of the pitch if it goes to the LHB.

FB looking to pass ball into screen, who is receiving strong to pass back to FB or roll strong and drive into the space ahead.

Right midfielder starts wide and leads forward, looking to pick the ball up from the screen and having an option to pass square to attacking midfielder or looking to attack the baseline.
