In this pre-season session the concepts of counter-pressing in the attacking and middle thirds are introduced and developed. Players will learn how to counter-press effectively to win in less than 6 seconds by making the space around the ball carrier as small as possible therefore reducing passing options. If unable to win the ball within 6 seconds players will stay high up the pitch whilst taking up BPO positions and revert to a trigger press, block passing lanes and pin opposition in their own half.

Organisation:
4v4v4 in a 25m x 30m (end zones 25m x 12.5m, middle zone 25m x 5m). White team starts with the ball and must play back to their designated pivot (3 or 4 to play this role for each team) before they can attempt to penetrate the middle third and pass to the yellow team on the other side of the channel. The black team can send two defenders in to press and recover possession of the ball. The remaining two defenders stay in the middle third and cut out passing lanes to the yellow team. If the defenders regain possession in the front or middle third, all defenders can enter the attacking third and attacking the goal in a 4v4. After the attempt on goal (to score a point must finish in top or bottom corners), the team that loses possession becomes the new ball recovery team with play starting with the yellow team this time. If the white team successfully penetrates the middle third and gets the ball to the other side (they score a point), the yellow team must play back to their pivot before playing forward. At the same time the two black players in the middle channel will press the ball and the previously pressing black players will become the defenders in the middle third cutting out the passing lanes.
Variation/Progression:
- Adjust the way the game starts (4v4 in one area and pass one ball between the two teams alternating, when coach calls play the team with the ball is BP and the BPO team must organise two to press and two to exit the area and cut out passing lanes OR 4v4 in one end with each team with a ball, coach calls a colour and that team presses with two leaving to cut lanes whilst the other is BP).
- Add time limit for BP team to score a point by penetrating the middle third
- Each player on the possession team has a maximum of three seconds to control and release the ball
- Adjust the numbers (BPO team decides how many press and how many cut passing lanes)
- Adjust the size of the area smaller/larger
Team Tasks:
Win the ball as quickly as possible to score a goal.
Player Tasks:
- Support team mates in creating 2v1 overload during 6 second counter-press
- Cover short passing lanes forwards during counter press
- Protect central areas in BPO shape when trigger pressing (force them wide)
- React immediately to trigger
Coaching Cues:
- When the possession team first get possession, attempt to win the ball within 6 seconds of play starting by squeezing the ball carrier and creating 2v1 overload.
- When applying pressure to the ball carrier, if you are not one of the closest two to the ball carrier, cut short passing lanes in all directions
- If you are unable to recover the ball within 6 seconds, retreat into BPO positions high up the pitch and wait for trigger to press when to press (forced to a side-line, back to goal, slow pass, backwards pass)
- When the BP team has been forced to a side line, press and lock them into that side by overloading that side and forcing them into a mistake
- When the BP team receive back to goal, slow pass played or pass backwards that is the trigger to collectively press and win the ball or force a mistake
- When applying the press ensure that we do so collectively in the press, cover, balance method

Organisation:
6v6+2 GK in a 35m x 50m which is divided by a half way line. Play starts with the white team with both teams spread out across whole area. Once BP team loses the ball all players from that team must enter that half and win the ball back quickly and play to their target player. The possession team are unable to pass to the target player at the opposite end of the pitch until they have maintained possession for at least 10 seconds. If the possession team successfully passes to the target player at the opposite end they score a point.
Variation/Progression:
- Number of passes instead of time duration for possession team (in situation that possession team are not moving the ball out of congestion quickly)
- Each player on the possession team has a maximum of three seconds to control and release the ball
- Change to 5v5 in the pitch with a neutral on each side line in addition target players (if no
- Add goals to replace target players and ball played into open space in attacking half after time/pass limit to attack goal
Team Tasks:
Win the ball as quickly as possible to score a goal by passing to the target player.
Player Tasks:
Goalkeeper (1):
- Communicate to your team mates what you can see to assist them in winning the ball
- Move along the entire goal line to be a passing option the the recovery team as soon as the ball is won
Defensive Mid (6):
- Be the deepest player in the pressing unit
- Prevent the target player getting the ball by covering the passing lane
Centre Mids (8/10):
- Support 7/11/9 in creating 2v1 overload during 6 second counter-press
- Cover short passing lanes forwards
- Protect central areas in BPO shape when trigger pressing (force them wide)
- React immediately to trigger
Wingers (7/11):
- Support 7/11/9 in creating 2v1 overload during 6 second counter-press
- Cover short passing lanes forwards
- Protect central areas in BPO shape when trigger pressing (force them wide)
- React immediately to trigger
Striker (9):- Support 6/8/10/7/11 in creating 2v1 overload during 6 second counter-press
- Cover short passing lanes forwards AND backwards
- Protect central areas in BPO shape when trigger pressing (force them wide)
- React immediately to trigger
Coaching Cues:
- When the possession team first get possession, attempt to win the ball within 6 seconds of play starting by squeezing the ball carrier and creating 2v1 overload.

Organisation:
4v4v4 in a 20m x 25m. Two teams play together in possession to create and 8v4 inside the space against another team who is the ball recovery team. The possession teams attempt to maintain possession of the ball for as long as possible (duration) whilst the recovery team attempts to win the ball as soon as possible. If the recovery team wins the ball they join the team who did not lose the ball.
Variation/Progression:
- Number of passes instead of time duration for possession team (in situation that possession team are not moving the ball out of congestion quickly)- Each player on the possession team has a maximum of three seconds to control and release the ball
- Adjust the size of the area
Player Tasks:
- Pressure the ball carrier and immediate support
- Close down the space between you and the attacker as quickly as possible
- Defenders to confront attack with their knees bent to establish a low centre of gravity to adapt to changes of speed and direction quickly
- Players should be side once they have closed down the space between them and the attacker, with the front foot facing the ball and using the back foot to pivot on and change direction.
- Show them either a side-line or back into another defender and attempt to win the ball
- When you are providing cover, stand deeper than the player apply pressureto cover the passing channels forward AND to cover a 1-2 combo.
- When providing cover, stand narrower enough that you can step across andintercept a through ball but wide enough that you are covering as much space aspossible
- When being the balance player you can see the whole picture so communicateto everyone what is happening whilst standing on an angle to provide balance.
