8v9 Specific Practice

RED (1-4-2-1) Coached

BLUE - Coached (2-2-3-1) & Keeper for SSG.

RED Principles

Fast pressure on the ball

Protect the middle

Stay narrow & compact

Stop split passes

Protect the space behind

BLUEs without RB/LB in SP and without CB/CB in SSG.

REDs without wide forwards & CF for SP & and just wide forwards for SSG to slightly underload central areas to make it more difficult for defending team.

SP - 20 Mins (3x5 mins)

SSG - 20 MINS (2x10 mins)

Competitive loading for SSG with score kept.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

PROGRESSION - Push a BLUE CM up top to play with the CF behind midfield line so its 4v4 between halfway and midfield line. Add a time limit of 15s per attack so that the ball speed and intensity is high. If the attack includes a ball into the CF through the midfield line - 2 goals.

REGRESSION - Player (GK at edge of practice) can come in and act as a pivot player to help overload central area and push on the DF's (6v4 in central area). RED's only allowed 3 players in central area meaning a pass through the lines becomes easier for BLUE.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

Team - "Break the midfield line within 3 passes" "If we can find the CF with 3 passes - 1 goal".

Individual CF - "Can we see an interchange with a CM - don't be afraid to drop temporarily". DF "Get on and support the wide midfielder - be aggressive" CM - "Swap with the CF if you see them drop into midfield" "lets get a shot away in 10s"

CONDITION - BLUEs have to look to break the midfield line within 20s. REDs only have 15s to score in 2 wide goals once possession is won back.

TARGET - BLUE - Score a goal and play through CF through midfield line - two goals. Everything else, 1 goal.

RED - If they win the ball back and score within 10s, two goals. Everything else, 1 goal.

PROBLEM 1

BLUE LCM interchanges with BLUE CF to attempt to make central space to play through.

RED CM's stay compact and protect the middle of the pitch rather than tracking the run. RED RCM goes slightly higher so close off a natural passing lane into BLUE LCM. RED CBs step forward to close space between defence and midfield.

RB step inside to force play wider and protect the middle of the pitch. LB steps across to protect the middle channels. Number 10 gets across to force early pressure onto the ball.

PROBLEM 2

BLUES force play down right side to try and isolate LB 2v1 (BLUE DF looks to overlap BLUE RW). in turn, BLUES look to expolit space centrally left by RED CM as player shifts across to then try and play BLUE CF/CM.

RED LB gets touch tight to BLUE RW. RED CMs come across to force play backwards. RED CAM & CF slide across to get early pressure on BLUE DF on ball.
