Specific - Defending the Switch of Play (20 mins)

Organisation

  • Coach working with Blues who are set up in a 4-4-2 but without both wingers and one striker. Blues can enter the channels.
  • Reds will be managed as attackers, set up in a 3-5-2 but without the wide CB's and one striker. GK on the red team. Red wing backs are restricted to only play within their channels.
  • Pitch size is a half pitch, two channels are created with flat markers (put in as white lines on the graphic) which run parallel with the edge of the 18 yard box.
  • 2 mini goals placed at the top of each channel.
  • Coach to act as server at the centre spot with balls placed nearby.

Explanation

The practice will always start with the Red team being served the ball from the server . The target for the red team is to score in the big goal (2 points), before they can shoot the ball has to be played in both wide channels. If the ball is won by the blue team they will try and score in the small  goals (2 points) or dribble over the half way line (1 point)

Coaching Points

  • When the reds have the ball in a central area blues are looking to remain compact and should use the width of the 18 yard box as a guide to follow this.
  • If the ball is played into the channel this is the trigger for the blue full back to engage and press the red wingback, looking to prevent them from passing back inside and ultimately switching play. Body shape at this point should be to show the wingback down the line.
  • If the ball is successfully passed back to a central area the blue midfielders and striker should press hard to stop the ball being switched, specifically pressing the attackers inside shoulder trying to force the ball backwards or the way it came from.
  • Blues should concentrate on stopping passes that will result in a switch, the furthest player from the ball should be left.
  • Pressure on the ball is key.
Points for team being managed
  • Be patient
  • Target is to switch to each channel before shooting therefore do not play forward unnecessarily.
  • Look to make the area as big as possible to allow for the switch to be an option.

SSG (15 mins)

Organisation

  • Mini goals removed and big goal placed 15 yards into the other half, tapered markers from the post to the halt way line.
  • Second CB added for the red and an attacking midfielder for the blues. GK added for reds also.

Explanation

We now have an 8v8 game and are still working on the same principles. Markers are left in to define the wide channels but there are now no restrictions for the reds being in them. The aims of the game will carry on from the specific practice, reds will look to switch the ball before shooting, but it is now not essential. Blues will continue to be coached in the same way to stop the switch of play. Using the same trigger points as before.

Coaching Points

  • Now the red full backs have more freedom this needs to be considered and blues should decide when best to engage.
  • As always with defending we are looking to protect the central areas and if we can force the attackers wide this is good.
  • Body position is key to success, all blue players should look to show reds wide.
Targets/Conditions
  • Reds will score bonus points if they are able to switch to both channels before scoring.
  • Blues will score bonus points if they can force the ball back into the channel and keep it there.
  • Blues must score within 15 seconds of gaining possession, once this time is up play will start again wit the red GK.
