Description

OFFICIAL GAME START TO OUR NEW SPRING. REMEMBER THIS IS STILL PRE-SEASON SO WE ARE LEARNING AND BUILDING UP TO WHAT WE WANT TO BE AS A TEAM!

FORMATIONS:

IN POSSESSION, WE PLAY A 1-4-2-3-1.

OUT OF POSSESSION IN OPPONENTS HALF - 1-4-3-3 WITH A ZONAL PRESS

OUT OF POSSESSION IN OUR OWN HALF - 1-4-5-1 -  WITH A MID OR LOW BLOCK

PRINCIPLES OF PLAY:

  • BUILD OUT FROM THE BACK. WE HAVE GREATER POTENTIAL PLAYING OUT FROM THE BACK. UNTIL THE OPPOSITION SHOWS UP THE ABILITY TO STOP US BUILDING OUT FROM THE BACK WE ARE COMMITTED TO THAT 100%!!!
  • 30-40 YARD VIEW - IF WE SCAN THE FIELD IN THE 30-40 YARD RANGE, THE WHOLE GAME WILL OPEN UP FOR US. ALLOWS US TO SEE THE FORWARD PASS EARLIER, LOOK FOR POSITIVE MOVEMENT AHEAD OF US, MAKE EARLIER DECISIONS AND PUT PRESSURE ON THE OPPOSITION HIGHER UP THE FIELD.
  • FRONT LINE PLAY - #7, #9 & #11 ESPECIALLY GIVING MUCH MORE FOCUS TO CREATING MOVEMENT AHEAD OF THE BALL AND LOOKING TO GET IN BEHIND THE BACK LINE - ESPECIALLY WHEN WE HAVE A LITTLE TIME AND SPACE TO ALLOW A PLAYER TO GET THEIR HEAD UP AND SEE SPACE AHEAD OF THEM
  • TRANSITION MOMENTS: WE NEED TO KEEP POSSESSION IN THOSE FIRST 2-4 PASSES AFTER THE BALL CHANGES. WE SHOULD NOT BE TOO KEEN TO DRIBBLE IMMEDIATELY AFTER A CHANGE OF POSSESSION AND NOT SUCCESSFUL AT FINDING THOSE FIRST PASSES AFTER TRANSITION.
  • IN POSSESSION: STRONG SIDE OUTSIDE BACK SUPPORT, ATTACKING MINDSET IN WIDE 1V1 MOMENTS IN AREA CLOSE TO GOAL
  • OUT OF POSSESSION: MORE ORGANIZED AND DISCIPLINED PRESS. TAKING AWAY PASSING LANES AND NOT JUST CHASING THE BALL. WHEN YOU GO THOUGH YOU MUST GO HARD. GENTLE PRESS IS NO PRESS AT ALL

DEFENSIVE PHASE - REGULAR

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES: ZONAL/MAN PRESS TRANSITION- DISCIPLINED BUT AGGRESSIVE.

INITIAL TRIGGER IS BASED ON THEM PLAYING OUT FROM THE BACK. OTHERWISE IT'S TRANSITIONAL BASED

BE AWARE OF TOO MUCH CHASING AROUND ESP. THE LINE OF 3

OVERALL TACTICAL THEME: THE AWARENESS AND QUALITY OF OUR PRESS. PRESSING IN THE RIGHT MOMENTS, IN THE RIGHT AREAS OF THE FIELD. THE GOAL IS TO CUT OFF PASSING LANES FROM OPPOSITION HALF INTO OUR OWN HALF, TO FORCE MISTAKES OR LONG BALLS.

CUT OFF SPACE/POCKETS IN FRONT OF OUR BACKLINE (MARKED RED)

TOP PRIORITIES:

1) RECOGNIZE THE TRIGGERS FOR THE PRESS!

**NEW#7 & #11 - RECOGNIZE WHEN DEFENDERS FROM BEHIND THEM (#2, #3) ARE CLOSE ENOUGH TO ALLOW THE PRESS

**NEW: MIDFIELDERS BEHIND FRONT 3 AND OUTSIDE BACKS (#2 & #3) MUST STAY MORE CONNECTED TO THOSE PRESSING TO TAKE AWAY PENETRATING PASS OPTIONS TO BREAK OUR PRESS

*CUES TO PRESS OR APPLY PRESSURE FROM THE FRONT

bad touch, opponent going back to their own goal, bad pass, ball in the air, player with their back turned to you, player trapped by the sideline with no room to maneuver

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

DEFENDERS

**-Be PATIENT when defending in wide areas in 1v1 battles. Goal is to DELAY as long as possible

* DO NOT allow any balls through the back line centrally....make everything go wide! (Zone 14 - REMEMBER). READ THE FLIGHT OF THE BALL AND DECIDE WHEN TO LET BALL RUN THROUGH

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

 MIDFIELDERS

**When ball is lost, how quickly do we mentally and physically transition into a defensive mindset and position? CLICK MOMENTS!

 FORCE THEM TO GO LONG WITH THE BALL WHEN WE CAN! BY BEING COMPACT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD

#7, #10 & #11 - Look for passing lanes to cut off into the center midfield areas.STAY CONNECTED TO EACH OTHER. DEFEND EARLIER!!

OUR FIRST 2-3 PASSES AFTER WINNING POSSESSION ARE CRITICAL AND DETERMINE IF WE WILL BE SUCCESSFUL IN THE GAME!

DON'T TRY TO BE TOO FANCY WHEN WE WIN THE BALL BACK BUT CAN WE PLAY IMPACTFUL BALLS FORWARD? (NOT LONG, JUST FORWARD)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

ATTACKERS

#7, #11 & #9 -RESPONSIBILITY TO CONNECT TO PREVENT OPPONENT HAVING TIME ON THE BALL AND EASY PATHS INTO MIDFIELD. STAY CONNECTED

*Attackers must be switched on to recognize the triggers to press and stay narrower and compact to make an effective press.

*Show patience in waiting for the moment to press. Don't press the GK unless in the midst of press the ball is passed back to GK.

*Do you have cover behind to make your press effective

*if playing out from the back wait for the GK to make his decision and who he passes to then we press to force them down one side or the other.

*on first pass to wide areas #9 works to cut off half the field with primary goal of cutting off forward passes or passes to midfield (not necessarily the GK)

TRANSITION & COUNTER ATTACK

TRANSITION IS ALWAYS SUPER CRITICAL.

THE TOP PRIORITY IS:

MAINTAIN POSSESSION AFTER WE WIN THE BALL BACK

  • 1,2,3 PASSES ACCURATELY AFTER TRANSITION WILL HELP US CREATE OPPORTUNITIES

  • ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES: WHEN WE WIN POSSESSION (TRANSITION) CAN WE MAKE ACCURATE FORWARD PASSES (WHEN POSSIBLE)
  • CAN WE TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO COUNTER-ATTACK WHEN WE REGAIN POSSESSION?
  • QUICK DECISION MAKING, QUICK PASSING (AND ACCURATE)
  • READ THE SPACE IN FRONT TO DETERMINE RUNS WITH BALL, PASS THE BALL AHEAD, BALL MOVEMENT, PLAYER MOVEMENT, ETC
NEW: NOTICE HOW WE DO NOT REFER TO "DRIBBLE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE WHEN WE WIN THE BALL BACK"

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES WHEN WE LOSE POSSESSION: GET COMPACT, STAY COMPACT, DENY CENTRAL PENETRATION AND WIN BACK POSSESSION BY FORCING OPPOSITION INTO MISTAKES (WORK RATE!)

ATTACKING PHASE

IN POSSESSION IN THE ATTACKING HALF OF THE FIELD

PRIORITY: STRONG SIDE OUTSIDE BACKS GETTING HIGHER UP THE FIELD TO ADD SUPPORT AND NUMBERS TO THE ATTACK

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

MIDFIELDERS

  • (30-40 YARD VIEW) MIDFIELDERS GET YOUR HEAD UP  - DO I HAVE TIME/SPACE TO MAKE A PENETRATING PASS THROUGH/OVER THE DEFENSIVE LINE

SEE THE RUN, PLAY THE BALL

*HAS THE BALL BEEN PLAYED HORIZONTAL/SIDEWAYS? MAKE A FORWARD RUN OFF THAT PASS.

NO PRESSURE ON THE BALL? THIS IS OUR MAGIC MOMENT TO PUT PRESSURE ON THEIR BACK LINE

If the defensive team is not applying hard pressure to the ball, get your head up and can you find an attacker making penetrating runs beyond the back line? Force the defensive unit to back up OR can you run with the ball

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

ATTACKERS

  • #7, #9 & #11 LOOK TO MAKE RUNS IN BEHIND ESPECIALLY IF DEFENSE IS PLAYING HIGH UP OR WE SEE OUR TEAMMATES IN POSSESSION HAVE TIME/SPACE ON THE BALL
  • AGGRESSIVE ATTACKING MINDSET IF WE GET A CLEAR 1V1 SITUATION OUT WIDE (#7 & #11 ESP)

*#7, #9 & #11 ALWAYS LOOKING TO APPLY PRESSURE TO THE BACK LINE BY CREATING PENETRATING RUNS FORWARD AND AT GOOD ANGLES ESP. WHEN MIDFIELDERS HAVE TIME AND SPACE ON THE BALL

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

DEFENDERS

Set the foundation for our attacking play by making smart decisions while playing out from the back.

  • BUILD UP FROM THE BACK IN OUR OWN HALF.
  • STRONG SIDE OUTSIDE BACKS PROGRESSING HIGHER UP THE FIELD TO SUPPORT ATTACKING OPTIONS
  • CBs & WEAK SIDE OUTSIDE BACKS SLIDE ACROSS TO MAKE A BACK THREE FOR COVER.
  • BE CALM, BE COMPOSED, BE ACCURATE, BE MOBILE

DO NOT FORCE THE BALL FORWARD. COMBINE WITH OTHER BACK 4 IF NO FORWARD OPTION OR GO LONG IF NECESSARY.

 *If the clear, clean pass is not available while playing out from the back, don't be afraid to go longer with the ball to relieve some pressure. That applies to both GK and to CBs.

*When ball goes back to GK, he should ALWAYS have two passing options to his left and to his right. A third option in #6 dropping in between both CBs is also an option.

*Identify when the pressure is coming from (do we have a front 3 attackers or just a front 2)

SET PIECES

ATTACKING:

What are we trying to achieve in different moments of the game?

KICK OFF:

  • GET THE BALL FORWARD ON KICK OFF/RESTARTS. FASTEST PLAYERS OUT WIDE AND SPRINT FORWARD ON KICK OFF. TRY TO WIN POSSESSION DEEP IN OPPOSITION HALF
  • DO NOT SEND THE BALL BACK TO OUR 18YD LINE DURING THE KICKOFF!!!

FREE KICKS - Ben, Byron or Quino may be asked to take kicks closer to the goal with a direct shot.

Ryan, Brennan, Quino, may be asked to take kicks if we are outside goal scoring range and need a good ball played into the danger area.

 - if we are inside 40yds from the goal - can we create an attacking moment by putting the ball in a dangerous area.

- if we are inside 25yds - can we take a good strike on goal ensuring that we make the GK work (DO NOT PUT THE BALL OVER THE BAR OR MISS THE GOAL ENTIRELY)

IMPORTANT (THIS IS NOT HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER)

-if we are OUTSIDE 40 yds (or conditions do not allow a good ball into the box) WE POSSESS the ball (only exception, if we are losing and it is towards the end of the game - we might pump the ball in the box then).

CORNER KICKS -Quino (impossible), Ryan, Brennan, or Ben may take depending on who is in the game or the moment of the game.

- let's try to mix up our corner kick repetoire!

Impossible - Player coming around the back, really deep beyond far post to head or play a ball back into the danger zone

Meat = 1-6 go to their spots and create multiple points of attack

Veg = All on the line.

PKs - Ben W, Byron, Austin, Quino (in that order depending on who is on the field).

 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

DEFENDING SET PIECES

ORGANIZED QUICKLY ON SET PIECES - Our set pieces are a priority; make genuine efforts to win the ball first in defending situations. ACTUALLY TRY TO HEADER THE BALL RATHER THAN JUST JUMPING IN THE AIR!

DO NOT LET THE BALL BOUNCE!! Bouncing soccer balls in our defensive half/third will be absolutely destructive for us! BUT READ THE FLIGHT OF THE BALL FIRST!

Recognize mismatches, recognize strongest players, shape of the wall (tallest players in the direct shooting line, etc, etc). Man to man on corners. High on the 18 yd line for free kicks (TRACK RUNNERS!!!!)

WIN THE PHYSICAL BATTLE!!!

DEFEND IN THE 1ST PHASE, 2ND PHASE, 3RD PHASE AND BEYOND - DO NOT BE A BALL WATCHER AND LOSE TRACK OF YOUR OPPONENT

BEST HEADER OF BALL ACTS A "FLOATER" ON DEFENDING SITUATIONS (QUINO, DYLAN)

GOAL KICKS

NEW POINT OF EMPHASIS - TOOLS TO HELP US WIN THE BALL FROM OPPONENTS RESTARTS ALSO

If the opposition team goes long from goal kicks/punts, etc so we have to be prepared to match up technically and tactically to win possession consistently.

  • Read the GK body shape and line up compact on the side of the field that he is aiming to. It's far easier to move towards a short ball than to retreat to a long ball that is going over our head.
  • be compact and together to win the ball. Win the first ball, but if you can't then read where it is going and win the second ball.
  • ANGLED KICKS TO THE RIGHT OR LEFT BUT NOT CENTRAL. ONLY IF WE ARE FORCED TO GO LONG.
  • AVOID OVER KICKING OUR TEAM FROM PUNTS TOO. ONLY IF WE ARE FORCED TO GO LONG.
