Activity #1 (15 mins)

Arrange players as in diagram. Each player has a ball. Players will be in position performing set ball manipulation skills which have been demonstrated by the coach. While performing the ball manipulation skills players are listening for various commands from the coach. These commands are:

'Dribble' - when this is called players dribble through the cones in front of them, into the middle cones where they perform a set turn before dribbling back to their start position without going through the cones.

'Figure 8' - players dribble around the two cones next to them in a figure 8 (mix this up and call 'figure 8 right' and 'figure 8 left' when this is called players must use only that foot.

'Run' - players leave their ball and perform a set footwork pattern through the cones. They then run into the middle cone, turn and sprint back to their balls.

'Right' - players dribble their ball to the space on their right.

'Left' - players dribble their ball to the space on their left.

'switch' players dribble their ball to any open space.

Important - After each command players return to the ball manipulation skill while waiting for the next command.

Variations/Progressions:

Opposites - Run is dribble, dribble is run, left is right, right is left, switch remains the same.

Activity #2 (15 mins)

First player works on various footwork patterns through the cones (without a ball). They then sprint to the ball in front of them and complete a figure 8 going either around the red cones or the blue cones. After completing the figure 8 they stop the ball where they collected it and spring back. Stagger the players so players are not waiting for a player to finish the figure 8.

Variation / Progression:

- As the player gets close to the ball the coach should hold up either a red or blue cone. The player does the figure 8 around the same colored cones. You can then make it the opposite game. Players go around the opposite color.

- Players now start with a ball and dribble through the cones working on different footwork patterns. They then dribble towards the red and blue cones and complete the figure 8 with the ball they dribbled. The coach still holds up cones to indicate which color to dribble through.

Activity #3 (15 mins)

Arrange players as in the diagram, preferably in groups of 3. If you have a group of 1 or 2 then the coach should be the server. For groups of 3 the first player comes out and stands opposite the group facing the other two players. The other two players each have a ball in their hands. The first of the two players comes out with the ball and throws the ball to the player opposite. This player then works away from the middle - they go up and over the agility hurdle / side on cone, then back over and up on the balance mat. In this diagram they would go over the obstacle on the left first then up on the balance mat on the right foot. While on the balance mat the player will be served a ball for them to volley back. They then repeat this on the right. They should do this 2x on the right and 2x on the left. Once they have done 2x on each side the serving player will catch the ball and place it on the floor and step to the side. The player who was working now runs out and collect the ball. They dribble to cone #1 and perform a set attacking move. They then continue to cone #2 where they either perform a set turn or go around the cone working on inside and outside cuts. After this they dribble back to cone #1 and perform another attacking move before dribbling to the side and back to their group. If the coach is not serving, then rotate the player every few goes.

Activity #4 (15 mins)

Arrange players as in the diagram. Player 1 is stood by the cones working, player 2 is resting. Player 1 should do quick footwork over the cones (you can also use rings here or have cones going horizontally). Randomly the coach will shout a color. If the coach shouts 'Red' the players quickly spring behind them, collect the ball and dribble to the red cone, at the cone they either do a turn or cut the ball around the cone. They then race back. First player back gets a point. Players then switch.

Variations/Progressions:

- Coach now calls two colors. If the coach shouts 'Red and Blue' the player now dribbles to the red cone and back, then the blue cone and back.

- This time when the coach shouts go the player turns and, either receives a pass on the ground from the other player, or that player has the ball in their hands and serves the ball into them in the air. The player must now control the ball before dribbling.

- Player 1 faces player 2 and while they are doing the initial footwork they are also throwing and catching a ball with player 2.

- Player 1 faces player 2. Every time they go over the cones they either do a pass on the ground or a volley until the coach shouts out the colors.
