Players can switch sides easily.

Screen 2 (5 mins)

Looking at 2-2-2 formation

Talk about the roles of the formation:

  • What's the role of the defenders?
    • receive balls from the GK to pass up the field
    • defend the goal
  • What's the role of the midfielders?
    • transition the ball from the defender to the strikers (long passes?)
    • be the first line of defense
  • What's the role of the strikers?
    • receive ball and put it into to goal

What's our general responsibility as players?
  • Defend the goal
    • It's the GK's house.  Protect her house!
    • Keep the ball out of the danger zone (see shaded area)!
  • Set up good shots/passes
  • Fill in temporarily where needed

Exercises:

  • Move up and back down the field as a group
  • Pass the ball back and forth while staying in position.
    • Add other players to try to get the ball.
  • Use two GKs serving goal kicks and see which team can put the ball in the goal fastest using all the players on their side
  • Ditto above, but cross the field from defense to midfield and from midfield to striker.

Screen 3 (5 mins)

Looking at 2-1-2-1 formation

Talk about the roles of the formation:

  • What's the role of the defenders?
    • receive balls from the GK to pass up the field
    • defend the goal
  • What's the role of the defensive midfielder?
    • move back and forth between midfield and defense as needed.  Who's ready to run?
  • What's the role of the midfielders?
    • transition the ball from the defenders to the striker (long passes?)
    • need to have great passing skills
    • be the first line of defense
  • What's the role of the striker?
    • receive ball and put it into to goal
This formation is a little trickier than 2-2-2.

What's our general responsibility as players?
  • Defend the goal
    • It's the GK's house.  Protect her house!
    • Keep the ball out of the danger zone (see shaded area)!
  • Set up good shots/passes
  • Fill in temporarily where needed
Exercises:

  • Move up and back down the field as a group.
  • Pass the ball back and forth while staying in position.  Add other players to try to get the ball.

Zone work in 2-2-2 formation

Progressions:

  • require both midfielders to touch the ball
  • require foot tricks
Regressions:
  • move the goals closer to each other

RAPINOE ZONE

Equipment needed:
  • 4 cones
  • 1 ball

Each team designates one player that can enter the Rapinoe Zone unopposed.  If a pass gets to that person in the zone, a point is scored and everyone else has to leave.  If that person dribbles into the zone, everyone else has to leave the zone.

Strategy:

  • Defenders
    • don't let a pass get to the middle of the field!
  • Attackers
    • get to the middle of the field if you can
    • If the middle is too well-defended, work the sides to get the ball down the field!
