Shadow Defenders (5 mins)

Shadow Defending:

Players partner up and mimic soft defending body shape and movement without a ball and then with a ball. Attacking partner isn't trying to beat their partner, simply help them warm up their body shape and shifting ability.

4 reps per player without and 4 reps with ball. Working in straight lines as well as zig zag. Can assign a simple move to the attackers (take, step over, single scissor) to keep it interesting.

Technical Coaching Details:

Body shape is low and balanced, able to easily pivot on their back foot. Position related to partner is slightly farther away than touch tight. As partner swerves, defender should pivot quick and light.

Blue team attacks, red defends.

Red team player begins "C" run onto field when they hit half way, blue team runs in.

Blue team players must attempt to get past defender to dribble through or run through the cone gate. 1 point for ball through, 1 point for body through.

Red team players defend the gate focusing on their defensive approach and dual. If attacking player and their ball is forced out of bounds in any direction before entering gate, all points go to defending team.

Coaching Points:

1. Close down (fast "C" run), slow down (body control and angle), sit down (low stance on balls of feet), show down (force ball and player in the direction you want).

2. The ball or the man can get past you but never both!
