Description

Intentions:

This sessions topic is Possession. The learning out comes are keeping the ball. Why do we keep it? What are we trying to achieve? Design focuses on the attacking principles of play. The session is building up play to pass and penetrate. Out of possessions will be in the session through session design but the coaching focus remains on the in-possession principles. All core technical skills will come out within the session design. Again, the focus for the coaching is the attacking core technical skills.

Principles of Play (Main Focus):

Supporting play, creating space, movement. With the intention to penetrate. Transitions will happen within the session design.Bringing out how do we transition to play and then to penetrate.

Core Technical Skills:

Mainly Passing and receiving. Although the players will be challenged to use all through practice design. When discussing passing and receiving a link to the 6 capabilities of skill should be present and touched upon at different relevant points throughout the session.

Player Engagement:

Fun, competitive challenges. Scoring system for light competition in the first phase. As we move in to phase 2 and 3, posed challenge and problem-solving ideas through open questions. ‘’How long can we keep theball?’’ ‘’Can we look to play away fromcrowds to space?’’ ‘’Might we need to play back to play forwards?’’

Coaching Behaviours:

Command use to explain new drills. Demos if necessary anduseful. While remaining aware of ‘down-time’. Use question and answer to present challenge/problem, the answer come out practically in if they are successful or not. This is a longer theme block as consistency and repetitionis key to learning. Observe and offer feedback. During ball rolling use positive re-enforcement through praise. Maybe when required, drive-by individual interventions. During recovery breaks key coaching points. Whole group stop and looking if the trade-off of stopping everyone is worth the picture and learning it presents (subjective). Balls available and rolling as often as possible.

Safety Considerations:

Due to nature and desired outcome of the practice design. No slide tackles. Scanning awareness to avoid the on-going interference within thecpractice. Hydration and rest breaks at appropriate points. Not to long as for players to become too cold.

Additional notes:

The pictures the players learn from look different from where they are stood and the process differently. This learning will come from decision making and doing. We have two more sessions on this theme.Including adding in two player combos. Which come out naturally in the sesessions from practice design. Try not to over coach (Verbally). Trust thatthey learn from play.

Can we find an opportunity to discuss non verbalcommunications between a passer and a receiver?

Pre-session preparation and planning (additional):

Session plan shared with parents. Players requested through parents’ group to either wear Grey or Blue kits. Save time not usingbibs and boys prefer to play in a kit bib free. Discussion had with assistant regarding set-up, in session support and session intentions.

Phase 2 (15 mins)

Phase 2: (15 minutes): Opposed, slight overload. Still a match-up scenario:

3*4 minutes, (up to 1 minute break). Directional end zone game. Keeping possession ready to penetrate. Working on the principles of create space, movement, support play, and penetrate. The session design encourages length and depth to team play.

One team starts with the ball. One end zone simulates keeper. Other end zone a pass to a front of diamond player. Keep possession, trying to work to end zone player to score. Challenges. Can we play back to draw the other team out/create space? Start from GK. Retreat rule in place for realism and time to build. Kick ins to play quick within 4 seconds. Observe and feedback. Looking to see understanding or feedback on,

·        Distance between passes.

·        Possession means you can’t concede No need torush or force play.

·        Can be used to manage the game.

·        Encourage tackles and challenges to transition.

·        Keep ball in play.

S- Pich size, use half a 5v5 (30m*20m). 3m deependzones. Size presents more compact workspace. Encourages quicker decisions and actions. Realistic to clustering you may see at this age group.

T- Possession. Playing with length and depth to ourgame. Preparing and trying to penetrate.

Phase 3 (15 mins)

Phase 3: (15 minutes): Opposed, slight overload. Still a match-up scenario:

3 * 4 minutes, (up to 1 minute break). Directional wide channels game. Keep possession ready to penetrate. Working on the principles of create space, movement, support play, and penetrate. The session design encourages adding width to the play. Use of goalkeepers still allows toremain on topic from phase 2 and offer depth and length to the team’s game. Can we play wide to create space or play away from danger? Will this help us to penetrate?

Start from Goalkeeper to allow for build up play actions to form. RD and LD to play in their wide channel. If they receive the ball in the wide area they are safe from being challenged. Interceptions can still be made by these players. Observe and feedback. Looking to see an understanding of and feedback on,

·        Movethe play quickly to create space.

·        GK,BD and FD supporting the wide players for passing options.

·        Positional awareness and balance

·        Moving forward and back as a unit.

·        Possession means we cannot concede. Play forward when opportunity created.

S- Pich size, use half a 5v5 (30m*20m). 5m wide channels. Sizepresents more compact workspace. Encourages quicker decisions and actions.Realistic to clustering you may see at this age group.

T- Possession. Adding width to create move space and opportunities topenetrate.

E- Cones for channels, and pitch marking. Balls available to keep gameactive. Stopwatch. Whistle.

P- Predeterminedteams. 5(6)v5 (Grey v Blue). Fred and George (GK’s) Right and left of diamond inthe channels.

Start with fixed areas. Maybe progress to freedom to move betweenzones, but channels are safe zones for RD and LD in their relevant channel. This progression will depend on learning and can always happen next session

All other rules as per games on a Saturday.Interventions if necessary for learning. However, try to observe and offer praise for last 10 minutes to see application of topic. Feedback can come inend of session wash-up.
