Football/Soccer Session (Academy Sessions): Immediate Transition to BP Positions - Getting forward in numbers quickly
Description
In this session the concept of transitioning into advanced attacking positions immediately after regaining possession is introduced and developed. Players will learn how to take up positions to the advantage of their team on the counter and how to counter attack effectively by getting numbers forward quickly. This will be achieved by identifying and playing forward options early and being proactive in 50/50 situations preparing to move forward dynamically when on the break.

Organisation:
5v5+5 in a 40m x 60m area. Both teams are restricted to one half of the pitch with the BP players allowed to use the two neutrals on the end line nearest to the play and the neutral on the half way line to maintain possession to create an 8v5. To score a goal the BP team must complete 8 passes. When the BPO team win they must counter attack by playing the ball to the neutral on the half way line who must pass back to the team who passed them the ball for them to play a long forward pass to one of the two free neutrals at the end of the pitch. At this point the counter attacking team will transition into the opposite half and attempt to score a point by completing 8 passes whilst the new BPO team try to win the ball back and transition themselves. Neutrals are restricted to two touches.
Variation/Progression:
- Have more neutrals on the half way line
- Passes from the neutrals don't count towards passing target
- If counter attacking team doesn't support the end player quick enough (pass received within 6 seconds) possession is lost
- Add mini goals
Team Tasks:
Move the ball and players quickly into attacking half to score by completing 8 consecutive passes.
Player Tasks:
- Make forward runs as soon as ball is recovered to support the 9 to prevent them being isolated
- Play narrow (close to the 9) so link up play can be achieved and to create space for fullbacks to overlap
- Attack the goal quickly when there is a numerical overload/even numbers
- Keep possession of ball until support arrives when BPO has overload
- Play the ball forward quickly when possession won
Coaching Cues:
- When the ball is won the 9 (neutral) must be presenting for the ball in pockets of space
- If the 9 is isolated, maintain possession until support arrives
- When ball is recovered whole team is to transition forward immediately
- When the outlet is free, play forward quickly

Organisation:
6v6+2+2 GK in a 40m x 60m area (end zones 40m x 10m). Both teams in possession play 5v5+2 and are restricted to one half of the pitch with 1v1 in the opposite end of the pitch. BP team trying to score and the BPO team trying to recover the ball quickly. When the BPO team wins the ball they must look to play a pass to the 9 in the opposite half (offsides apply via offside line). Once the pass is played every team member (except for target 9 and marking defender) transitions into the vacant half and attempt to score quickly. The BPO team recover into their defensive half and prevent them scoring. The neutrals play on the outside of the pitch restricted to two touches (can cross the ball). 1 point for a goal scored through combination play, two points for a goal scored within 10 seconds of winning the ball.
Variation/Progression:
- Offside line removed and offside set by last defender
- The outlet ball can be played to 9,11 or 7
- Neutrals to play inside the pitch whilst performing the same role
Team Tasks:
Immediately support the striker after the out pass has been played to score a goal.
Player Tasks
Striker (9):
- Remain high up the pitch to stretch the field
- Make frequent runs into pockets of space to create time and space to receive outlet pass
- Hold up the ball and link up with supporting players
- Attack the goal quickly when there is a numerical overload/even numbers
Wingers (7/11):
- Make forward runs as soon as ball is recovered to support the 9 to prevent them being isolated
- Play narrow (close to the 9) so link up play can be achieved and to create space for fullbacks to overlap
- Attack the goal quickly when there is a numerical overload/even numbers
- Keep possession of ball until support arrives when BPO has overload
- Play the ball forward quickly when possession won
Centre Mids (8/10):
- Play the ball forward quickly when possession won
- Make forward runs quickly once ball has been played to support front line
Fullbacks (2/5):
- Make forward runs as soon as ball is recovered to support the 9 to prevent them being isolated
- Be positioned wide to provide to stretch the defence and create space in the middle
- Attack the goal quickly when there is a numerical overload/even numbers
- Keep possession of ball until support arrives when BPO has overload
- Cross when we have a numerical overload/even numbersCentre Backs (3/4):
- Play the ball forward quickly when possession won
- Play higher up the pitch in possession to join the attack and prevent space between the lines in BPO
Coaching Cues:
- When the ball is won the 9 must be presenting for the ball in pockets of space- When ball is recovered whole team is to transition forward immediately
- If the 9 is isolated, maintain possession until support arrives
- When the 9 is marked tight, play to 7/11
- When 7/11 unable to support 10/8 to perform that role with 7/11 playing as 10/8

Structured Build Up
Session Objective:
In this session I aim to improve the team's ability to play out of our defensive third from goal kick scenarios in a controlled manner against a high press.
Organisation:
Full field dimensions, full game rules vs U/17's.

Organisation:
2 pitches of 4v4 in a 15m x 20m each. The possession attempts to make 5 consecutive passes whilst the recovery team attempts to win the ball as soon as possible, pass back to their target player and make 5 consecutive passes. The BPO team must send 3 players to win the ball in the opposition half whilst one stays as the outlet pass (can't be the same player remaining every time). The BPO team after the ball is won plays the outlet ball and try to score a goal by maintaining the ball for 10 seconds.
Variation/Progression:
- Increase the duration team is required to maintain possession for to score a point once transition made.
- All BPO players to recover the ball in same half and once possession won a player needs to sprint forward to receive the out ball before their team mates lose the ball (once out ball played BP team transitions into area as normal and attempt to make pass limit)
- Allow teams to nominate how many players to go and how many to stay
Player Tasks:
- 1. SCAN, 2. PASS, 3. MOVE, 4. SCAN
- Play the ball forward quickly when in transition
- Support the out option immediately
- Pass to the advantage of team mate (whether to feet or into space)
- Pass the ball firmly
