Progressive sessions addressing playing forwards through the thirds and breaking lines
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Key Factors
Progressing ball forward through lines - opposed
Organisation
3 Zones 20x10 Yards - 5 players in each
Middle zone defends - send 1 player in to end zones to win ball back
End zone teams must complete 3 passes and then look to transfer ball to opposite end zone, through middle zone
If defending team wins ball, play back to middle zone for a point
Each team spends 90 seconds as defensive team
Consider: - can we create triangles to allow a set back so player can move forward to play transferring pass
- keep body shape open to allow passes to move forward when gaps appear
- transfer pass does not have to go after three passes - keep the ball until gap appears
Progressions/Regressions: - transfer pass can only be made on the ground. - through defenders
- no pass limit before transfer pass - see gaps quickly or takes pressure off of keeping ball in end zone

Key Factors
Progressing ball forward through lines - SSG
Organisation
Pitch size relevant to age - split into three equal zones
Overload in defensive/attacking zones to begin 3v2
Middle zone matched up 2v2
Players are limited to their zone only - ball must pass through each zone before scoring
Consider: - can you create your space away from marker in middle zone to receive a pass
- can we look to play forward into next zone quickly - no limit to number of passes before you can advance
Progressions/Regressions: - One player can move forward from each zone to create 3v2 in middle or 3v3 in attacking zones: we can progress ball. by dribbling or passing now
- ball can skip zones: if the pass is on can we play into attackers early - can midfield then support?
- only two passes allowed in defensive zone before ball has to be played forward - encourages forward first thinking.

Key Factors
Progressing ball forwards through lines
Organisation
Cones set out at staggered 10 yard intervals
Player 1 passes to Player 2, who then sets the ball back in front of Player 1.
Player 1 now plays to Player 3. Player 2 continues their run forward to meet the set back from Player 3.
Player 2 then plays to Player 4. Player 4 dribbles to next area to become Player 1 in next group.
Player 1 becomes Player 2. Player 2 becomes Player 3. Player 3 becomes Player 4. Player 4 becomes Player 1 in next group.
Consider: - pace of pass when playing forward
- pace of set back for player moving forward
- timing of arrival to play pass forward - don't kill the space
- if ball moves forward 10 yards and gets set back 5, have we still progressed forward?
