Description

This session was delivered by Alan Irvine for an LMA Masterclass at St George's Park on 25/9/19.

It was based on statistics and research from the UEFA Technical Report on the 18-19 Champion's League, with particular reference to Liverpool FC and their style of play.

The session is taken from my observations and notes.

Unit Work 2

If 9 drops deeper, 7/11 can change the shape of their run and go down the outside of the full back.

The pass now goes between the CB and the FB mannequins.

Possible Progressions

Pass goes to 7/11 to feed 9 on a diagonal run.

Replace mannequins with defenders

- Start with just 2 CBs.

- Add a third defender.

- 1 MF player can join in the attack for cutbacks from wider positions.

Play starts withTeam B GK playing out from the back.

How to Play

Team B try to keep possession and work the ball into midfield.

Team A try to press high and win the ball to create shooting opportunities.

The Team A MF players can intercept passes into Team B's midfield and then join in attacks.

Possible Coaching Points

Team A forwards set traps to encourage Team B to play short.

Aggressive press from the front three.

Stop the forward pass - make play predictable - sprint to close down.

Try to finish in 1 or 2 touches.

This part of the session was designed to replicate the work of Liverpool's front 3 in the 18-19 Champion's League. Their aggressive pressing as a front 3 leading to a significant number of goalscoring opportunities.
