Specific Practice (10 mins)

Set Up

  • 11 Players + GK
  • Red Team (Coached) Formation - 1-4-1 (Working back from a 4-4-2)
  • Blue Team (Managed) Formation - 0-4-2 (Working back from a 4-4-2)
  • Red Team has a GK and are defending a full sized goal
  • Blue Team have 2 mini goals to defend
  • Coach is positioned on the halfway line with multiple balls
  • Using half pitch
  • The pitch will be tapered on the halfway line

 Description

  • The specific practice starts with the coach on the halfway line playing into blue #6. Or maybe they can start the game themselves by retrieving a ball from the unused goal.
  • The red team are aiming to defend against the overload within the defensive half and prevent blue from scoring.
  • If red win possession they can score in the mini goals.

Block 1 (3-4 minutes)

  • Problem: Defend the overload centrally with blue wingers playing narrow. The wingers should try to make angled runs on the inside to try and create problems for the backline.
  • Solution: Defend compact and aim to deny space centrally. Pressure on the player with the ball and show wide. Try to block passing lanes.

Block 2 (3-4 minutes)

  • Problem: Defend the overload on the switch. Opposite wingers creates width. Blues move the ball quickly. Once out wide can they exploit the space or try to create overlaps/underlaps out wide.
  • Solution: Apply pressure quickly when possible to the player on the ball showing them wide. Provide adequate cover to player pressuring the ball. Try to delay and slow down play. Important to keep a compact shape when transitioning from one side of the pitch to the other.

 Challenges, Conditions or Targets

  • Challenge red team to score within 15 seconds of gaining possession
  • Red score a point by getting the ball into the yellow neutral or scoring in either mini goal
  • Blue score by scoring in the full size goal.

Small Sided Game (10 mins)

Session Objective

  • The small sided game will focus on the red team defending the overload in the defensive half.
  • Understand when and how to defend the overload centrally and on the switch of play.

Set Up

  • The session will take place on half a pitch with full size goals at each end
  • Red Team (Coached) Formation - 4-2-1 (Working back from a 4-4-2)
  • Blue Team (Managed) Formation - 2-4-2 (Working back from a 4-4-2)
  • Both teams have a GK and are defending a full sized goal
  • Using half pitch
  • The pitch will be tapered on the halfway line
Description

  • Play will start with blue goalkeeper and then continue as a regular match.

Block 1 (2-3 minutes)

  • Problem: Defend the box. Blues try to get the ball out wide quickly and try to create overloads that enable players to drive into the box.
  • Solution: Can the CM's come across to help the full backs when overloaded out wide or does the centre half need to provide cover out wide with the CM then dropping in to support the backline. Players must force wide and try to slow play down to enable the defensive unit to keep a good shape.

Block 2 (2-3 minutes)

  • Problem: Defend centrally. If one of the blue centre backs can try and step in with the ball and create the problem for the 2 red CM's centrally.
  • Solution: Defend compact and aim to deny space centrally and in behind. The GK must stay connected to be able to react to any opportunities that arise from balls/runs being played through and into the box or from driving runs from wide. Pressure on the player with the ball and show wide. Closest player to the ball is always the player to press.

Block 3 (2-3 minutes)

  • Problem: Check for understanding. Free play.
  • Solution: React and adapt to red strategy for creating the overload.

Challenge

  • Red team to score within 15 seconds of gaining possession

Target

  • Both teams score in opposition full size goal
