Target Practice (15 mins)

Target practice

Line players up on a line and go over the Push Pass technique. have them pass back and forth with a partner to get the feel of the technique.  After some practice, place 4 cones down across the midline.  Now it's a game. One side against the other. The first team to hit 5 cones, wins the round. Play best 2 of 3.

Coaching Points:

-Place a non-kicking foot next to the ball and aimed at the target

-Passing foot turned sideways - Toe up and heel down

-Lock ankle

-Bend knees... Smooth stroke about 1-2 inches above grass... Push it to them.

-Move two steps to meet the ball

Pacman (10 mins)

PAC MAN: 20 x 20-yard area.

Skills Used: Push pass technique and dribbling with all surfaces.

Organization: The coach picks one player to start off with a ball and they are the Pacman. Coach demonstrates how to pass the ball with the inside of the foot (Push pass). To start, everyone begins moving around inside the grid. The player or players with the ball must use the push pass technique to hit other players below the knees. If a player is hit then they become a Pacman also and they grab a ball and also try to hit players with the same technique. The game ends when one player is left and that player starts off as the Pacman for the next game. Play 3-4 rounds

Coaching Points:

-Turn foot outward to make contact with the inside of foot - Bend knees - Lock ankle (squeeze) - Look at the target and then at the ball to make contact - non-kicking foot aimed at the target

Passing Gate Competition (10 mins)

Gate Passing -20 x 20

Place about 8 gates(or mini-goals) using cones and place them about 5 feet apart around the field.

All players need a partner and one ball. Demo the activity with a player from your group so that the players know what you expect.

Start with each group of partners setting up across from each other like in Example 1 in the diagram. When the coach says GO players have 1 minute to pass through as many gates as possible in one minute.

Switch Partners, each round and players have to try to beat their previous score each time.

3-4 rounds. Everyone goes at the same time.

Coaching Points

-Proper Push Pass technique

-Communication is important

-Pass then move for a high score. Don't stand and watch

2v1 to goal (15 mins)

2 v 1 to Goal

Put players into even lines at the orange stating gates. Place the balls in one line.

The coach serves as the first defender until everyone gets the hang of it. Then add a live defender who can intercept and win the ball and pass it back to the coach. This gives the attacking pair a chance to win it back to continue their attack. (teaches transition)

At first, let them choose the dribble or pass to beat the opponent.

Add a rule that they must execute a pass before they can shoot to promote passing. If two passes are made then the goal is worth 5 points.

Play for about 15 minutes

Now it is time to scrimmage! 4v4 or 5v5
