Recovery and Delay - 6v3 Skill Practice (15 mins)

Organization

  •  3 Defenders and 6 Attackers.

Instructions

  • Defenders are looking to block the pass of the Attackers in possession of the ball, forcing them to play over or around them. When the ball is passed to the other side, the Defenders can recover to reduce the distance and press the ball making it difficult for the player in possession to pass again.

Attackers must take a touch before passing the ball and the can step into the area if they wish. Keep the game competitive by giving one goal to the Defender if:

    • If the Defenders make a block
    • Wins the ball with an interception or tackle
    • The ball goes out of play (a bad pass from the Attackers, which means a turnover of possession in the game)

Attackers get a goal if they successfully pass to their teammates on the opposite side. Rotate the players every 3 minutes.

Coaching Points

  • As a 3, Defenders need to be aware of the Attackers behind them and the ball.
  • Defenders need to communicate with each other and work together to prevent the ball from being played forward.
  • Three Defenders need to work together to keep the ball in front of them, denying passing opportunities to the Attacking team. When in a position to recover, the nearest Defender needs to press down the line of the ball to get into positions to spoil with their teammates looking to support them.

5v5 to target (15 mins)

Organization

  • Each team 5v5  Three target player on each end on the midfield third

Instructions

  • The team in possession get a goal for successfully passing to the team on the Target players , . The player on the outside must successfully control the ball in between cones for it to count. The teams out on the outside look to pass the ball back to them as soon as possible.

If the Defending team wins the ball, they keep it, attempting to do the same the opposite way.

If the ball goes out of play, a server will play a ball into the team in possession (replicating a throw-in). The ball must be played in from the side it went out from. Rotate the teams every 5 minutes (depending on how much time you have to do the practice).

Coaching Points

  • The unit of 4 needs to be aware of the players behind them to prevent forward passes.
  • Players now need to speak to the unit, between them, and the Striker in front to prevent the opposition from playing forward.
  • The nearest Defender needs to stay in line with the ball and prevent the forward passes to the players on the outside.
  • If the ball is switched to one side from the other, players need to slide and screen together to prevent forward passes through the outside gates
