Session Overview
Learning Objectives (Outcomes)
Recognize & Decide: Players will improve their ability to recognize when to play through, around, or over based on the type of defensive pressure (FAW Principle: Breaking lines).
Execute & Adapt: Players will enhance their technical execution (passing angles, receiving skills, movement) to break lines in a match-realistic scenario, adapting to defensive cues.
Create & Exploit: Players will demonstrate increased creativity and confidence when creating and exploiting scoring opportunities in the final third (Welsh Game Model: move the ball quickly, find the spare player, and create scoring chances).
Session Structure & Timings
The session is divided into two blocks within each segment (Specific Practice, Small-Sided Games, and Combined Practice-SSG). Work-to-rest ratios are included to manage intensity (aerobic and anaerobic energy systems).
Specific Practice (20 minutes)

Block 2: 7 minutes work, 3 minutes rest/feedback
Small-Sided Games (20 minutes)
Block 1: 7 minutes work, 3 minutes rest/feedback
Block 2: 7 minutes work, 3 minutes rest/feedback
Specific Practice into Small-Sided Games (20 minutes)

Aim: Reinforce breaking lines in a more competitive environment.
Organization
Set-Up:
-7v6 + GKs (in-possession vs out-of-possession) with the same roles/positions.
-In-possession tries to score in the big goal; out-of-possession transitions to score in the two mini goals.
-Ball restarts at the center circle with in-possession.
Block 1 (7 mins):
Emphasize quick combination play to break lines (central transitions).
Rest/Feedback (3 mins).
Block 2 (7 mins):
Add a points system (e.g., 2 points for a goal scored from a “through” pass; 1 point for any other goal). Encourage playing over if defenders press high.
Rest/Feedback (3 mins).
Coaching Points
Awareness of Space: Identify gaps in the defensive shape.
Timing of Forward Runs: LW, RW, ST to exploit behind defenders.
Support Angles: LB, RB providing width and angled support to play around.
Progressions & Regressions
Progression: Limit touches for in-possession players to encourage quicker decisions (e.g., max 2 touches).Mira la guía en la parte superior de esta página para saber por qué no se muestran las imágenes interactivas de Fútbol.
Aim: Consolidate learning by integrating the specific practice patterns into a game-like scenario.
Organization
Set-Up:
-Begin with a pattern-based build-up for the in-possession team (for example, LB → LM → ST → RW). Once the pattern is completed, transition into the SSG phase.
-Out-of-possession team defends realistically, then transitions to attack mini-goals upon regaining the ball.
Block 1 (7 mins):
Focus: “Play Over” the defensive line if the press is high.
Rest/Feedback (3 mins).
Block 2 (7 mins):
Combine all three options (through, around, over) in free play once the pattern is executed.
Rest/Feedback (3 mins).
Two Key Strategies (Executions) for In-Possession
Central Combination with Overlap-LB stays wide at the halfway line; LM drifts inside to receive from LB.
-LM combines with ST (ST drops into midfield), while LW makes a run behind the out-of-possession RB.
-LB overlaps around LM if LM is under pressure to play around.
-ST either lays off to LM for a through ball to LW or to LB on the overlap.
-Pitch Geography: Emphasis on left flank corridor near halfway line, with ST dropping into the central zone.
Diagonal Switch to Weak Side-RB in line with RW near the halfway line, with RM tucked inside.
-If OOP team compresses the left side, LM/LB switch the ball diagonally (play over) to RB/RW.
-ST adjusts position to receive a cross or cutback from RW.
-Pitch Geography: Big diagonal pass from the left side near the halfway line into the right wide channel, exploiting space.
Coaching Points
Scanning: Constantly check shoulder for space and defenders.
Weight of Pass: Accurately measure the pass to feet or space.
Speed of Transition: Once the pattern is complete, quick switch to SSG mindset.
Coaching Interventions & Feedback Strategies
During the Session
-Concurrent: Provide real-time cues to guide decision-making.
-Freeze & Rewind: Stop at critical moments to illustrate key decisions (e.g., missed opportunity to play over the top).
-Q&A: Pose questions to players about their decision (“Why did you choose to play short instead of a diagonal pass?”).
-Drive-by Coaching: Subtle, quick tips to individuals on the move.
Corners of Development
Physical Corner
-Work-to-Rest Ratios: Approx. 7 minutes on, 3 minutes off to allow partial recovery.
-Energy Systems: Aerobic base with anaerobic bursts; essential for repeated sprint ability in match scenarios.
Social Corner
-Team Meetings: Brief gatherings during rest periods to problem-solve collectively (“How can we create better space in wide areas?”).
-Captains: Appoint a mini-captain in each block to lead communication.
-Problem-Solving Tasks: Set a mini-challenge: “Find at least two ways to play through in each block.”
Psychological Corner
-Conditions/Targets: Offer point systems for successful line-breaking passes.
-Challenges: Encourage players to attempt more creative passes (risk-taking) to build confidence.
-Scoreboard: Keep a tally of line-breaking attempts that lead to shots on goal, fostering motivation.

Specific practice (SP)
Aim: Develop decision-making and execution of breaking lines (through, around, over).
Organization
In-possession (LB, RB, LM, RM, LW, RW, ST) RED
Out-of-possession (GK, LB, LCB, RCB, RB, LCM, RCM) BLUE, defends the large goal.
The ball restarts from the center circle with the in-possession team each time the ball goes out of play.
Block 1 (7 mins):
Focus on playing through: Encourage quick combinations centrally (ST dropping to link with LM/RM).
Rest/Feedback (3 mins).
Block 2 (7 mins):
Introduce playing around by using full-backs (LB, RB) for overlaps, emphasizing wide play.
Rest/Feedback (3 mins).
Coaching Points (Technical & Tactical)
Body shape: Open body to receive and play forward.
Passing & Receiving: Quality first touch away from pressure.
Movement Off the Ball: Create passing lanes, timing of runs to break the line.
Decision Making: Assess the pressure; if central is congested, switch wide (play around). If space is behind, consider the long pass (play over).
Coaching Interventions
Freeze: Stop play to highlight a key moment (e.g., ST’s positioning to receive).
Walkthrough: Physically reposition players to demonstrate the correct spacing.
Concurrent: Provide verbal cues while play continues (e.g., “Look for the overlapping LB!”).
Bullseye: Address a specific individual’s action (e.g., “Excellent first touch, LM. Now look to thread the pass!”).
Roles & Responsibilities (When Restarting & Execution)
In-Possession (IP) Team
Position wide near the halfway line, offering a passing option on the left flank.
Provide forward runs when space is available (play around).
Mirror LB on the right side, staying wide near halfway line.
Overlap with RW (play around) to create wide overloads.
Tuck in slightly to link play with ST or combine with LW.
Look for through passes (play through) or switch wide (play over).
