Specific / Creating and exploiting overloads / in possession
Welsh way principle
Understand when and how to exploit a numerical advantage against the opposition
Organisation / Area size
Area size 2 x 44 m x 25 m with a 5 m shaded area in the middle.
Designated area for footballs behind both goals.
6 x Blue, 6 x Red bibs
Blue team sets up in a back x 3, 1 x CM and 2 x Attackers
Red team sets up in a back x 3, 1 x CM and 3 x Attackers.
Position specific for the Full back working with a front x 3 creating a 4 v 3 in the final third.
Session Details
The ball starts from the goalkeeper who looks to find a defender with the ball so we can exploit the 3 v 2 overload and get one of the fullbacks to either dribble or pass to the next zone they are then free to create a 2 v 1 against the opposite full back. All other players are locked in to their positions to begin with (Except fullbacks). Both teams will get a chance to explore different ways to create and exploit the overload if the Blues start from their keeper one of the RED front three will drop out this will mean that it will be a 3 v 2 for the Blues in the defensive third. As I'm looking to coach the Reds in possession the Blues will be managed on a timed count down to score or restrictions in touches.
Challenges, Conditions and targets.
1. Challenge for both teams is to get out of the defensive third in minimum passes, so we can get the fullback forward in to the final third creating an overload out wide.
2. If the attackers win the ball in the defensive third and score within 5 sec the get an extra point.
3. Can only score by using the CM to combine with either fullback going forward.
4. All players are now unlocked, can we get the ball wide extra point if scoring from a pull back for the CM.
5. 3 points if the fullback can make an under lap and score.
6. Extra point for a first time finish.
Key points
In possession
1. Find the spare player
2. Exploit the numerical advantage
3. Make the pitch big width and depth
4. Fast passes and forward movement
6. Decision making (Weight of final pass to set up first time finish)
Out of possession
1. Press Quickly
2. Protect the middle
3. Leave the furthest player
4. Block the passing lanes
5. Block the shot

Problems to be solved
1. If we can't go forward in the defensive third invite pressure so we can recycle the ball and change areas of attack.
2. Use the overload in the middle to switch to the opposite fullback
3. Are the front three playing narrow which creates space for the overlap or are they on the touchline which creates space for the under lap.
4. If wide player is on the touchline can he come in centrally creating space for a pass between CD and fullbacks.
5. Can we get the front three to be flexible and rotate positions.

Session Details
Start from player (1) who performs a one / two with player (2) player (1) passes to player (3) player (2) then runs around the Blue cone and takes on player (4) in a 2 v 1 to try and score. Same will happen on the right side after every set the players will move up one station. e.g 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4 and 4 goes to the back of 1 to begin the cycle again.
The coach is to work on the possession principles of the overload and will coach both sides of the pitch looking at how the use the opportunists to explore the decision making and how to exploit the overload. Might need an assistant to help with the offside rule.
If the defender wins the ball he can score in the mini goal
10 min block
Challenges, Conditions and targets.
Encourage the player to be brave with the overload / numerical advantage and be creative in how they can manipulate the defensive player creating space for their teammate. Encourage the players to be creative in the 2 v 1 to come up with different ideas with the help of different interventions. Offside rule from the start.
1. Limit on touches
2. Time limit to score (Encourage realism to the practise)
3. Extra point if defender scores in the mini goals (Keep them motivated)
