Warm Up (10 mins)

Organization:

1 box. 20yds in length and 20yds in width. 1 group of players with a ball each, in the box dribbling without pressure. 1 group of players surrounding the box without a ball. Players in the box are dribbling until the coach gives a signal for the players in the middle to run and try and steal the ball from an attacker. Once the defender successfully steals the ball, they look to dribble the ball out of bounds.

Rules:

  • Once a defender picks an attacker to shut down, they cannot change who they are defending.
  • If you win the ball from the attacker, 1 point. If you win the ball from the attacker and dribble out of bounds, 2pts.
Play 8-10 rounds of 15-20 seconds in length.

Coaching Points:

SHUT DOWN: Shut down the space between you and the attacker.

SLOW DOWN: As you get closer to the attacker, start to slow down to not over run the attacker.

SIT DOWN: Get nice and low, knees bent, on toes, anticipating the movement of the attacker.

STAY DOWN: Stay low, knees bent, arms length away from the attacker. On toes. Weight for the decision of the attacker and then step in to win the ball.

Challenges:

  • Keep score. Make it a competition.
