Combination Play in Wide Areas session to increase player's understanding of how to create chances in wide areas. Last few weeks, we've been working on switching play to stretch opposition so now it's time to focus on ways we can exploit overloads when we've successfully switched the ball. My Primary Player will be 7, with 2 and 10 my secondary players. Tertiary players will be 9, 4, 11 & 3.
Throughout the session, I will encourage creativity to execute combinations and create opportunities to score. Whilst, I will not be working directly with the defensive team, the focus for them will be remaining compact and quick transition.

Wide Combination finishing practice (width 50 yards x 35 yards)
Feed the ball into the attacking team on one side of the pitch. Here, the attacking team has a 3v2 overload in the combination zone, with full-back, winger and midfielder against the defending full-back and winger, the attacking team must play forward from the combination zone for one of the three players on that side to cross. Once the ball has been played into the crossing zone, the defenders are not allowed to recover and attempt to block the cross. Three attackers – the centre-forward, plus the far-side midfielder and winger – should attack the box against the defending team’s two centre-backs. If defenders win it, they try and pass into the mini goal.
Support- Players encouraged to play on different lines, and create diagonal receiving lines to allow the ball to progress forward. Ideally 7 always widest, 10 inside option for 2. Support dependent on pressure on ball.
Movement from 7 to get on ball- Always try and receive with open body position if possible. Double movement- Away and to the ball- to the ball and away making sure we ark and create angle for pass.
Runs Behind Defence- Make runs behind the defending full-back. This will allow us to slide balls towards the byline for crosses and cutbacks, these runs will be dependent on whether defence are narrow (overlap from 2 or underlap from 10) or wide (corner run from 10 or wall pass between 7 & 10) and they should be on the defender’s blind side, to make it harder for them to mark or track the run.
Third man-support- Might be times when defenders sit off & screen pass to 7. 7 to stay patient, 2 to play inside to 10 who can then play to 7 in one to then create a 2 vs 1 against FB.
Third-Man Run- When a combination is beginning in the 3v2 situation, the third player can start to make their run forward when the receiving player is close to receiving the ball. This will allow the receiving player to use a first-time pass to break out of the combination zone. Examples 7 running in behind soon as 10 about to receive so 10 can play it around corner in behind defender or 10 running underlap soon as 7 receiving.
Cross selection- Byline = cutback or stand it up Deeper cross= whip into corridor of uncertainty
Closest player always flashing in corridor of uncertainty
Far side winger/ 3rd player back post or cutback zone
Progressions
Defenders do not let anything inside
FB to jump out to winger
Winger to jump to FB

SSG 8 vs 8 (3-3-1 vs 3-3-1)- Wide combination play (width 50 yards x 35 yards)
KCP
Create Space- When we have good possession can 7 & 11 provide as much width as possible (zones 1 & 5) to create more space which we can then exploit. 2 & 3 to support winger, type of support based on organisation of other team. 10 to offer support to winger again support based on other teams organisation. 9 to play on shoulder of CB to create more space for us to build play. 4 to provide option inside to switch play and for security & cover.
Switch the ball- Can we switch ball through working horse shoe 2, 3 & 4 or switch in 1. Switching the ball will help us stretch defence and create overloads which we can then exploit.
Support If opposition have good pressure on ball- If opposition are organised and compact, less space to exploit. So support might have to be a bit closer to the ball and we might need to more patient and careful with our combinations or
look to switch the ball again. 10 to get a bit closer to 7 for the wall pass, 2 to support behind the ball (Always make sure 2 player behind ball for cover & security) 7 to make decision on whether we progress or keep building. Support dependent on whether 7's body position and where 7 receives it
-If back to goal 2 stay behind
-If body open and 7 can turn can 2 and 10 think about forward runs behind defence
-If 7 receives rolls inside can 2 execute a third man run
Runs in behind- Movement off 7 when defence are disorganised- If defence are disorganised and there's more space to exploit can we get forward runs off players into those spaces that could offer passing angles through or around the defenders.
Players need to identify what run to make depending on the positioning of the defender in the wide area, If the defender is trying to stay narrow, an overlapping run will be better. 7 to drive inside, closest player 10/2 need to make opposite movement with an underlap or overlap.
If the defender is trying to get tight to a player who is wide, then a penetrative corner run can exploit space to create a goalscoring opportunity. 7 to drive outwards or hold line and 10/2 making sure they time their run to stay on side to run underlap or corner run, could also be 9 as they could be closest
3rd man movement- When we have 2 vs 2 situations in wide areas can we create overload with 3rd man run to exploit space behind defence. 1 come to play, 1 go away.
Combination 1- 7 to cut inside which triggers 2 to start overlap and set to 10/9 who then plays the ball between opposition FB & CB
Combination 2- 2 receives, 10 to trigger combination by moving towards the ball which then means 7 has to move away, 2 punches into 9 who plays round the corner to 7
Cross selection- Byline = cutback or stand it up Deeper cross= whip into corridor of uncertainty
Closest player always flashing in corridor of uncertainty
Far side winger/ 3rd player back post or cutback zone
Counter Press- When we lose closest player has to put pressure on ball- if we've got more numbers in that area can be a really aggressive press otherwise soft press to delay most dangerous pass whilst we recover.
3 in a line- Throw-ins- Throw in routine to create crossing opportunity

Waves- Attackers vs Defenders (width 40 yards x 35 yards)
4 vs 3- 4 red Attackers attempt to score against 3 white defenders. Attackers allowed in any zone they want, defenders only allowed in 1 zone. Assist must come from wide zone. If whites win the ball can they punch it in to the mini goal as quickly as possible.
Underlap/Overlap
Defender in wide zone narrow= Overlap
Defender in wide zone wider= Underlap/Corner run
Engage the defender
Player on ball to dribble at defender with purpose to engage them and give player receiving more space.
Movement
Always opposite movement to player on ball, Accelerate once this movement is made towards the defender e.g soon as player cuts in trigger to get round w/intensity
Cut in/inside line = overlap
Drive outside/outside line= Underlap
Wall Pass
If pressure good can 9 can support come closer to ball to act as a wall pass
Cross
Cross selection- Byline = cutback or stand it up
Deeper cross= whip into corridor of uncertainty
Progressions
2 defenders allowed in zone
First time finish
3 attackers
