  • Playing the ball in front of defenders so they don't receive with their back to the pitch

  • Play the way you're facing and don't be afraid to recycle with your keeper

Working with the back 6 players. If you play different formations the exercise can be adjusted (3 in the back, 2-6s)

Add Defenders (10 mins)

Start by adding 2 defenders a 9 and 7 or 11. If too easy add a 10 as a defender or you can add another offensive CM

Coaching points:

  • Body shape - Receive facing forward. 
  • Positive first touch if possible - drive up the field and break lines with dribble when not pressured.
  • Goalie should be playing the ball in front of his targets
  • Create angles
  • Look to split defenders

Small Sided Game (25 mins)

Small sided game: 7v5. Progress to 7v6 or 8v6 depending on success rate

Possession always starts with a goal kick - Can add a restriction that the offense cannot score until the GK has touched the ball again after the goal kick starts. This ensures they are involved with the build up.

Change the defensive formation to adapt to the team you are preparing for or to just give the offense a different look.

What is the defense giving us?

How can we break lines?

Are the high pressing or low pressing?

Coaching points:

  • Proper body position
  • Play the way you're facing
  • Don't be afraid to play back and recycle thru your keeper
  • Understand when to bypass the pressure and play higher up the pitch
  • If the 6 drops between CBs allow your outside backs to get even higher
  • Don't have players on the same line (meaning being flat when the angle of the pass allows you to get higher)
  • Read what the defenders give you and their body position in relation to yourself
