U9s Pre-session (Observation) (15 mins)

Key Factors

  • Arrival Session - Free ball time to focus on passing and moving with team mates  as players arrive.
  • No coach involvement / interaction. Meet and greet and brief each player on arrival about the session.
  • Players on arrival  briefed - free play lots of touches - pass the ball between groups / pairs, on the move, pass and move or in a group.
  • Varying surfaces of the foot, one and two touches and distances.
  • Interventions - no interventions for the arrival session.

  • Observation and reflection.

Organisation

  • As per session layout plan with the pitch divided into 3 zones zones (grids) marked out using different coloured cones red yellow and white.
  • Standard 20 x 35m pitch divided into two halves (parallel session for two team_ with coloured cones using pitch lines as markers.  4x mini goals and 2x full size goals (SSG) arranged as per plan. 
  • Mini-goals pushed onto the pitch side away from pitch and full size goals pulled onto the touch line on one side of the pitch.
  • 6x blue bibs and 6x orange bibs, ready in each square zone,  based on pre-arranged groups, on arrival (based on ability).
  •  Extend time into session to allow observations of players for late arrivals so all get some time  - 5 minutes.
  • One ball for each player ready by the access on arrival arranged in the two central zones divided equally.
  • Duration Between 10 - 15 mins prior to start.

U9s Tech Passing (15 mins)

  • Passing and receiving practice to focus on receiving on the back foot and moving technique.
  • Focus on technique to perform turns / change direction using a variety of surfaces and develop learn and practice new turns / moves.
  • Observe technique from arrival session and feedback to group. Layer practice based on observations and where the players are at.

Turn Technique - 1. Eye on the ball. 2. Decision, Change in Direction 3. Contact with Surface (feint) if required. 4. Head up 5. Low Centre of gravity. 6. Change of Direction. 7. Accelerate into Space.

  • Demonstrate, show in natural speed with the players and allow players to rehearse. One phase. Check they understand!
  • Players start on each of the same coloured cones around rach of the central square zone without a ball. Each of the players on the outside pass the ball to the player at the next cone. They recieve the pass and passes it to the next player, either in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction around each zone.
  • First minute for the coaches to observe ad reflect and layert technique and progressions.

Interventions - coach to observe from front or side as layout - judgment at the time to view each players technique waling around the group.

  • 1-1 interventions at the side of each group as and when required or at natural break.
Progression / regression.

+ vary the turns / moves increasing in difficulty each time the players are fluent with each technique.

+ / - move forward or backwards with the 'layers ' / technique based on observations.

+ using left and right where possible for technical balance.

- / + reduce / increase speed of the session.

+ mini-competition at the end. 20 balls placed between the two squares 10 in each. Race for each team to collect a ball perform a turn and return the ball back to their cone. Two per player only - each player must have two balls by their cone before they sit down.

Organisation

  • Layout as per layout plan. Transition from pre-session (arrival game) with no changes to the layout after a quick drink break.
  • 6 players per square divided into blues and orange bibs, pre-selected based on ability levels and handed on arrival.
  • One coach per group as per layout.
  • One ball per player, total of 6 balls per square with 4 spare ready for the last progression.
  • Time 20% of session time. (15 minutes)

U9s Technical - Welshway Turns (15 mins)

Welsh Way Moves

- L-move : Ensure ball is a step ahead - Put foot on the ball - use instep to push the ball behind the other leg (i.e. Cryuff turn) - accelerate away.

- Pirouette: Ensure ball is a step ahead - Put foot on the ball  - drag ball away with the opposite foot - rotating the body 360 degrees - accelerate away.

- Stop turn: Ensure ball is a step ahead - Put foot on the ball - roll the ball behind - turn body 180 degrees facing the opposite way-accelerate away.

  • Brief players in a group on the aim of the session. Question players when and why we change direction as players - interaction.
  • Demonstrate, show in natural speed with the players and allow players to rehearse. One phase. Check they understand!
  • Players  start on each of the outside cones around the central square zone without a ball.  Each of the players on the outside run into the square zone to a football, perform a turn to collect the ball and dribble it back to the cone they started at. Once at the cone the player performs another turn and dribbles the ball back into the central square zone.

U9s Welsh Way Turns Skill Session (20 mins)

Key Factors

  • 1 v 1 duel with the attacking player to drive towards a goal to encourage the defender to press / tackle which  will then allow the attacking player to decide to turn, change direction/ choice of turn in the situation.
  • Aim of the session is to practice using turns under pressure from opposition players using the techniques practiced in the technical session.
  • Explain focus and learning from the session with the group altogether before setting up the games.
  • Coach to demonstrate with the players, one phase and allow players to rehearse.
  • Orange vs  blue bibs. Each team to decide between each other the national team they represent for the tournament.
  •  Player feeds the ball in from the cone on the goal line (left hand side for right foot received / right hand side for left foot received) to team mate (attacker) on the left hand side cone of the central square zone who receives the ball.  Pass acts as a trigger for the defender  (limited pressure initially) to press the attacker.  The attacking player receives the ball on the right foot and drives towards one of the mini goals as the defending player tries to block the shot / tackle / intercept the ball .The player can perform a turn at the right opportunity to run at the opposite goal or score in the but can only score once they are in the scoring zone. Pop up cones and yellow cones either side of the half way line.
  • If the defender wins the ball they become the attacker and can score in the main goal after performing a turn.
  • When the attacking team have had 2 attempts each and swap places with the defenders.  Once both teams have received the ball on the right foot, switch sides and repeat the drill feeding the ball from the cone right of the goal but the attacking player receives the ball on the left foot. Team with the most points wins.

Challenges

  • Two goals if a goal is scored by a player using a turn. 
  • Two goals if the defender wins the ball and scores in the big goal using a turn.
  • One goal if it is scored without a turn but disallowed 2nd time if a turn is not attempted.

Coaching Points

Do the players identify when to turn and which turn do they use to change direction.

Do the players position their body correctly to perform a turn when changing direction.

  • + increase to fully opposed - planned after one - two phases based on observations
  • + / - time limit for the attacking player to score.
  • - limited / gradual  pressure defending to allow players more time to use a turn.
  • + players not allowed to use the same turn in successive turns if the score using one to increase variation.
  • + / - mix the duels into 2 vs 2, 2vs 1 combinations.

Interventions

  • Coach observes each area (one coach red zone / one coach white zone) from the side lines same side as the ball is fed into the attacking player.

Organisation

  • Layout as per layout plan - transition straight from technical session with mini-goals moved into place onto the goal line and central mini goals moved level with the yellow cones either side of the half way line.
  • Players divided into 2x teams with blue and orange teams (bibs) and split equally into each of the two zones. Goal keepers can be used in the large goal to provide shooting practice. 
  • Spare balls placed at the cone where the ball will be fed from either side of each large goal.
  • Coaches positioned in the centre of each zone to observe technique and allow 1-1 interventions when re-setting between.
  •  One planned drink per set (when both teams have played as attackers).
  • Time 18 mins.

U9s SSG - Ball Control with Conditions (25 mins)

Key Factors

  • SSG with conditions to encourage players to change direction and use turns in a game situation.
  • Standard match layout and rules providing realistic game situations with conditions to create situations for players to change direction. World-cup final from previous skill tournament between the same national teams picked before.
  • Aim  for the attacking team is to run the ball into the square zone and to change direction / perform a turn to release their player from the zone. Only when a zone player has been released can a goal be scored.
  • Challenge for the players -  to encourage turns and moves to change direction.  Individual points targets for competition.
  • Coaches start the match by feeding a ball to start. 
  • Target players / forwards rotated throughout the game to give each player opportunity in different positions and act as the target player in the opposition area and opportunity to perform a move to change direction and score. Players in the zone remain inactive until '  activated.'
  • Coaches rotate the ends by  randomly asking keepers to swap  ends whilst ball is in play. (Switching direction during play encourages players to quickly change direction).
  • Last 10 minutes conditions removed.
  • Progresssion / regression
  • + Attacking team must use different moves in succession to release their player before a goal can be scored.
  • - players can be tagged.

Organisation

  • Layout as layout plan.
  • Transition straight from skill practice with the pairs of  central cones closest to each of the the goals removed to leave a central square zone around the centre circle. Mini goals pushed to the side and standard goals moved into position during the drinks break between the two practices.
  • One player from each side removes bib and stands in the central square zone.
  • Standard 6v6 or 5v5 game based on numbers attending blue bibs vs orange bibs.
  • Last 10 minutes conditions removed to create a normal game
  • Time 25 minutes.
