Technical (Unopposed) - Passing in 2s (15 mins)

This activity is designed to have players learn basic passing technique with the inside of the foot while introducing several techniques for receiving by providing lots of repetition.

Set up

Players get into partners with one ball and go to one set of two cones set 8 yards apart. Players will stay behind their cones and will pass around the outside of the cones. Groups will alternate sides to work both feet.

Option 1

In partners at a close distance (in front of cone - approx 5 yards), player A passes the ball straight from right foot to their left. Player B then passes the ball on an angle from left foot to player A's left foot. Then player A passes straight again from left foot to partners right foot and so on.

Option 2

Behind cone, A controls with left foot and brings the ball across their body to their right foot. Then A passes to B who does the same sequence. After some time, coach will say switch and the ball goes in the opposite direction.

Option 3

Player A passes to the middle for player B to control with outside of foot to the same side as the foot they use. Then player B does the same sending the ball back to player A centrally to use the outside of the foot to move the ball with their first touch.

Progressions:

a ball each doing Option 2

a ball each doing Option 1 with only the straight pass option

1 ball passing 1 touch back and forth, other ball in a players hands to either toss back and forth or to increase difficulty, toss for a header while continuing 1 touch passes.

Technical (Unopposed) - St Johnstone Snake (30 mins)

Set Up:

Grid size dependant on age and level (typically do 10 wide and 15 long per box). Grid is 2 boxes long.

1 player on each end of the boxes

Once the players move through all of the grids and get to "the end", simply cycle back to the beginning to keep the snake flowing

Diagram Description:

A starts the movement by checking away and then to the ball at an angle

B passes to A and tells the player to turn

C moves towards the side that A went to then create space away from the receiver and gets a pass

A says man on set, gets the pass back and plays a ball to C into the next grid.

The same pattern continues up and down each grid in a snake format with players constantly moving forward 1 spot.

Progression 1

1 does the same movement

2 passes but says man on set this time

2 should suck their movement in towards player 1 to then move away into the open space

3 does the same movement as before to gain space away from player 1

2 passes to 3 who then sets back to 1 and then into the next grid

Progression 2

D starts the movement

E passes and says man on set as before

D after the set will then overlap E, receive the pass and then play the ball to F

F does the same movement as before and sets back and moves into the next grid.

SSG - 3 Line Game (15 mins)

Set up:

  • Grid is 15x15 boxes on the sides, 5/10 x 15 in the middle (size dependant on age and skill of players and how many players in the boxes).
  • Team divided into 3 teams. 2 on the sides and one in the middle.

Organization:

  • Coach plays ball to one of the teams on the sides.
  • Team in the middle sends defenders into the side grid (1 at first, build to 2 if ability allows).
  • Offensive team makes a set number of passes (3-5) and then the goal is to send the ball to the opposite side.
  • The pass to the opposite side can be through on the ground (remaining defensive players are permitted to intercept this pass) or over the middle group.
  • If they succeed then they score 1 point and stay where they are, defensive team then goes to challenge the ball on opposite side. If the defensive team wins the ball, they take the place of the attacking team and play continues as it started.

Details:

  • Shape of the attacking team (fill the box and be at good supporting positions)
  • Communication on offense
  • Proper body shape to receive the pass
  • Pace of play (1-2 touch)
  • Don't have to pass to opposite side after required number of passes, ensure the right opportunity

Coaching points (depending on level):

Attacking team:

- Proper passing technique

- Scanning for space, and teammates

- First touch away from pressure into space

- Body positioning to receive pass

- Off the ball movement to create passing angles

- Build passes (safe short to secure possession)

- Break passes (riskier through lines, need to be timed right)

- If 2 defenders closing, look to split

-Communication

- Use available space

Defending team:

-Speed to pressure the ball, slow when close to player

-Angle of run to try and force play one way. Teammates in the middle follow the play and shift as a team to cut off passing lanes. If second player - Player closest to ball pressures, second player covers.

Language:

- Man on, set

- Bounce it

- Turn

- Out the other way (switch)

- 1, 2

- Receive on the back foot

Final Game - 4v4 + 2 (30 mins)

Set-Up:

  • 4v4 + 2 (Neutrals) depending on your #s
  • No subs, make sure everyone plays
Goal:
  • The team in possession has an extra 3 players (2 Neutrals + GK) and should be able to dominate possession
  • Focus on:
    • Receiving on the back foot
    • Receiving on the half turn
    • Pace of play (1-2 touch)
    • "Go out the other way" (switching play)
    • Secure possession and keep the ball (make them run)
    • "It's ok to play backwards"
    • When you lose the ball "hunt" (get it back quickly)
    • Using the goalkeeper as an extra player in possession
Conditions:
1. Begin the game with players having to make a certain amount of passes to unlock the other teams goal- Adjust based on the skill level of your group and monitor their success - Is it too easy? Too difficult? Start small and increase the amount of passes.
  • Option A- Goals lock when the ball goes out of play.
  • Option B - Once the goal is unlocked, the team in possession can score at anytime until the opposing team crosses their own half (the opposing team's goal locks if you lose the ball in your own half)
  • Option C - once the goal is unlocked, if the team in possession loses the ball they must regain possession and complete a set amount of passes to unlock the other team's goal again

2. Players must pass back to their goalkeeper to unlock the other teams goal (use Option A, B, or C from above).

3. Let the boys play! Take away the neutrals and play a regular 5v5 or 6v6 game.
** For the first 10-15 mins, focus on interventions (stopping the play and showing them what you want - keep it short). Give them the last 10 minutes to play with minimal instruction.
