Screen 1 (20 mins)

Warm-up - 50 passes under pressure

ORGANISATION:

  • 2 grids of 10m x 10m area
  • 9 players in each grid

HOW TO PLAY:

  • Coach plays the ball into one grid and 2 opposing players enter that grid and try to win the ball whilst the players in possession must attempt to make as many passes before the ball is intercepted or goes out of the grid. If the ball is intercepted, coach plays another ball into the opposite grid and the other team sends in 2 players to also try to win the ball back.
  • Each team adds their passes until the first team to 50 passes in total is declared the winner.
  • Losing team is punished by running a lap around the small field.

COACHING POINTS:

  • Ensure your body is positioned correctly to see where the ball is coming from and where to pass to next.
  • Receive with back foot and first touch out of feet to enable quick pass to teammate.
  • If possible, pass with first touch as aim is to get as many passes as possible and keep the ball moving.
  • Don't remain static, move into position to either create space for your teammate or to be in better position/option to receive next pass.

CHANGE IT / PROGRESSIONS:

  • Limit the number of touches, either 2 touch or 1 touch.

Screen 2 (20 mins)

3 v 2

ORGANISATION:

  • 25m x 20m grid
  • 4 x big goals with goalkeeper in each

HOW TO PLAY:

  • Red team attack with 3 players to score, whilst 2 Green players defend.
  • Once a goal is scored or the ball goes out of play, the Green team then attack with 3 players and2 players from the attacking team become defenders. The last player to shoot or touch the ball from the attacking team does not become one of the defenders in the next phase of play.
  • This back and forth continues with high intensity and aggression from the attackers and good defensive principles from the defending team.

COACHING POINTS:

  • Closest defensive player makes first contact - can we 'delay'.
  • Second player provides cover to protect pass and space.
  • Can we disrupt the ball player and limit space.

CHANGE IT / PROGRESSIONS:

  • Increase or decrease field size.
  • Limit touches for attacking team.
  • Introduce time limits to score or to win the ball back.

Screen 3 (20 mins)

6v3 Aggressive game

ORGANISATION:

  • 30m x 20m grid
  • Attacking team vs Defending team (6v3)

HOW TO PLAY:

  • Defending team presses when triggers are met, such as a heavy touch, and overload etc
  • Attacking team try to score in small goals
  • If defending teams wins the ball they can score in other goals
  • both teams to play aggressively

COACHING POINTS:

  • The defending team works on closing down the attacking team once the ball is played into specific areas. Set “pressing triggers” where defenders know when to apply pressure (e.g., when the ball is passed into an isolated player or when an opponent takes a poor touch).
  • Defenders should move in unison, forcing the ball carrier to make a rushed decision and win the ball back.

CHANGE IT / PROGRESSIONS:

  • Make the area wider
  • Limit number of touches

Screen 4 (25 mins)

Aggressive press and play with FULL game simulation (25 mins)

ORGANISATION:

  • Use half of the pitch and split the teams into two.
  • Full game situation with on the run or limited interventions.

HOW TO PLAY:

  • Attacking Team: The goalkeeper takes the goal kick, and their players attempt to build the attack.
  • Defending Team: The defending team applies pressure high up the pitch. They must press quickly and efficiently, either forcing the ball into touch or winning possession.
  • If the defending team wins possession, they should try to immediately score or complete a pass to a target player.

COACHING POINTS:

  • Pressing Team: Focus on staying disciplined in the press, staying compact, and working together as a unit. The press should be triggered once the goalkeeper makes the kick.
  • Attacking Team: Encourage quick, accurate passes and players to remain calm under pressure. If possible, encourage the goalkeeper to vary the types of goal kicks (short, long, etc.) to keep the defenders guessing.
