Technical Blocked (10 mins)

Organisation:

1 ball

5 cones

1 manquin/obstruction

Description:

The player with the ball will pass to the player on the left, as this man recieves it the third man will then begin there run. Having played the ball, the passer will make a run beyond the manequin to recieve a 1-2. Having recieved the ball in their second position they will then play a pass in to space beyond the 3rd man runner who will collect it & run to then end passing the ball to a player on the otherside for the move to start in the opposite direction.

Rotate the player stood behind the manequin from time to time so that they are comfortable in all rolls. The 3rd man runner would become the original passer and the original passer would become the 3rd man runner the next time round.

Coaching points:

Ensure you give an in-game scenario so that the players can understand when this may be useful. A good exmple would be; the winger palying a 1-2 with the central midfieler whilst the full back overlaps.

Skill Variable (10 mins)

Description:

This step helps to add to the realism of the drill, by having the players in a position similar to that they would adopt within a game they are more likely to carry forward into a game with them. Here the scenario you would have would be; the centre back passing to the centre midfielder, who would play a cushioned pass to their partner in the central midfield role, they in turn will play the ball to the player acting as the winger, who will make a run towards goal. The opposing players will close down the midfielders in the centre on the cue of the pass and this rushes the player and puts pressure on them to get the ball away as soon as possible.

Progression:

It could be optional to put a keeper in the net and have the winger in a 1v1 situation but ensure that the focus is solely on the move leading up to the 1v1. it may also be an option to have the through ball played in the air as this may be the ball played within a game & it would also help to improve the wingers touch whilst running through on goal.

4 cones

10 bibs; 5 of each colour

In this game the players must work the ball to the target area of the opposing team, in order to do this they will need to move the ball quickly and it is down to their teammates to spot when to make these runs.

Reflection (10 mins)

This session was much more difficult to deliver as I had to explain what the purpose of the runner was so that they understood why I was running the session. This took some time and once they had grasped this much of the session had passed, I didn't spend much time working on the skill and this lead to quite an unsuccessful SSG. In future sessions I would like to spend more time on the Skill in order for them to understand the timings behind this piece if play and how to make it more effective in play.
