Defending in Groups

Structure:

Two teams, 5v5. Both teams set up in a 3-2. The grid is 30 yards by 25 yards. Coach is erving balls to either team.

Zones: 1 and 2

Training load: moderate 3 sets of 5 min shifts 1 minute rest

Strategy:

When Coach plays ball to attacking team, they look to combine to dribble into any of the three oppositions goals. Defenders looking to get compact, within the width of 18 yard box. top two defenders to act on a Pivot. One presses, other covers.

Key Factors: understanding moment of transition. Having left and right back squeeze towards CB. Top 2 defenders control the press. Encourage the interchange.

Tactics:

1) When first ST presses the ball, 2nd needs to drop into coverage role

2) Back 3 to squeeze together and stay compact.

3) If first line of Defense is beat, 2nd line must press hard and fast. Both looking to push ball towards outside in Zones 1 and 2. STs to drop into role

4) If CB presses ball, the other FBs drop to form a triangle - CB at top, LB and RB drop.
